Let’s begin the installation process. Luckily, it's not overly complicated and most people with basic technical skills can handle it using just a screwdriver.

First, make sure your computer is turned off and unplugged from the wall. Disconnect all cables and external devices. Then remove the side panel on your desktop or the small access panel on the bottom of your laptop.

In the image below, you can see the RAM access cover on my Dell laptop.

On laptops, this panel is usually secured by one or two screws. Once removed, the RAM will be visible and accessible.

For desktop PCs, there are typically two or three screws on the back holding the side panel in place. Remove them, slide the panel off, and set it aside to reveal the internal components.

With access to the inside, locate the RAM slots. On either side of each RAM stick, you’ll find retention clips that secure the module. This design is consistent across both desktops and laptops, although the clip placement varies slightly. Here's what the RAM looks like inside my laptop, with the clips clearly visible.

Gently push the clips outward on each side of the RAM stick, and the module will pop up slightly. In laptops, the RAM typically lifts at an angle, while in desktops it pops straight up. The photo shows how it looks on my Dell laptop.

Lift the old RAM carefully out of the slot, and you’re ready to install the new pair.

Each RAM module has a notch that ensures it fits only one way. Align the notch and insert the RAM in the same orientation as it was removed. For desktops, press straight down; for laptops, slide it in at the same angle it came out. When it begins to seat properly, gently push until the clips snap into place.

Posts 4 After installing both sticks and securing them in place, reassemble your PC. Replace the panel or side cover and fasten the screws. Reconnect all peripherals and power cable.

Now power on your computer. If everything went smoothly, your system should boot normally into Windows.

If it fails to start, double-check your installation—ensure the RAM is fully seated and no cables were accidentally disconnected during the process.

If problems persist, you might have a faulty module or a compatibility issue. In that case, reinstall the original RAM.
