Fix Apps Crashing on M1 Pro/Max Mac After Migration Assistant or Monterey Update

Some M1 Mac users may find that applications such as Steam, Minecraft, Lightburn, 0ad, Atom, Skype, and other Rosetta-based apps are crashing or failing to launch.

This problem commonly occurs after setting up a new Mac using Migration Assistant, but it can also affect certain Apple Silicon Macs that have switched from macOS Monterey back to Big Sur, or even upgraded from macOS Big Sur to Monterey. A typical situation might involve using Migration Assistant to transfer data to a new M1 Pro or M1 Max MacBook Pro from an older M1 MacBook Pro, only to find that previously working apps now crash unexpectedly on the new device.

The issue appears to occur exclusively when trying to open apps that rely on Rosetta — the compatibility layer that enables Intel-based apps to run on Apple Silicon systems.

If you're affected by this issue, the app will fail to start and crash immediately upon launch, displaying an error message similar to the following:

Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000001, 0x00007ff7ffc73af0 Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY Termination Reason: SIGNAL 5 Trace/BPT trap: 5 Terminating Process: exc handler [31174]

Triggered by Thread: 0

Application Specific Information: assertion failed [header->version

To resolve this app crashing issue, the fix is relatively simple — reinstall Rosetta in macOS.

The easiest method to reinstall Rosetta 2 is to open the Terminal application, which can be done by pressing Command Spacebar, typing "Terminal" into Spotlight, or navigating to the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, then entering the following command:

/usr/sbin/softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license

Press Return to run the command and begin the reinstallation of Rosetta.

Once Rosetta has completed installing (again), try launching the affected apps once more, and they should function normally again.

Have you encountered this issue? Did reinstalling Rosetta solve the problem for you? Feel free to share your experience in the comments below.
