Fix App Menu Bar Hiding Behind Notch on MacBook Pro 14″ & 16″
Jun 28, 2025 am 10:19 AMIf you own a new MacBook Pro 14″ or 16″ that has a display notch, you might have noticed that some apps' menu bar items get hidden behind the notch. This is quite common across many Mac applications. However, there's a workaround available that allows you to effectively shrink the display so that everything scales down and fits below the notch.
This method essentially creates a software-based bezel effect, which ensures the full menu bar is visible by hiding the notch. The downside is that it reduces both screen space and resolution.
Here’s how you can adjust the display scaling on a per-app basis to ensure the menu bar remains visible on any MacBook Pro with a notch—whether it’s the 14″ or 16″ model:
How to Adjust App Display to Fit Below the Notch on MacBook Pro 14″ & 16″
Please note: This feature is only available on M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pro models featuring a display notch:
- Close the app where the menu bar is being obscured by the notch.
- Open Finder and go to the Applications folder to find the affected app.
- Right-click (or Control-click) the app and choose “Get Info” from the File menu (you can also use the keyboard shortcut Command i).
- In the info window, enable the option labeled “Scale to fit below built-in camera.” This will cause the app’s display to scale down when launched, ensuring the full menu bar appears below the notch.
Keep in mind this adjustment applies only to one application at a time, so you’ll need to repeat the process for each app experiencing issues with the notch and menu bar visibility.
The solution and screenshot above are sourced directly from Apple support documentation. While it’s admittedly more of a temporary fix than a proper solution, it may be necessary if you're unable to access certain menu bar elements due to the notch on your MacBook Pro.
The video embedded below from Twitter illustrates how this macOS feature works:
Great news for those who dislike the notch! If you’re using an app where the menu overlaps with the notch, simply open Get Info for that app and check "Scale to fit below built-in camera".

Given user frustrations regarding menu bar accessibility due to the notch—and the divisive reception the notch has received overall—it seems reasonable that Apple could introduce a system-wide display setting in a future macOS update to universally scale the screen and hide the notch across all apps. Alternatively, third-party tools may offer similar functionality through dedicated utilities.
User reactions to the MacBook Pro notch have been mixed. Beyond aesthetic concerns, the most frequent complaints involve menu bar items becoming inaccessible or behaving unexpectedly due to the notch placement.
Below are two examples showcasing unusual notch interactions with menu bars on the M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″:

There are other software solutions aimed at hiding the notch by darkening the menu bar, but these don’t fully resolve the issue of menu items disappearing behind the notch or not functioning correctly with it. These problems are especially noticeable on the smaller 14″ MacBook Pro screen, though they can still occur on larger displays with apps that utilize many menu bar items.
