How to Install MacOS Updates Without Upgrading to MacOS Ventura
Jun 17, 2025 pm 01:23 PMYou probably already know that macOS Ventura can be downloaded and installed on any compatible Mac, but maybe you're not quite ready to install it yet or you're perfectly happy using macOS Monterey or Big Sur. If so, you'd prefer to keep those operating systems up-to-date instead of upgrading to Ventura.
Apple continues to provide software updates for both macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur, mainly for security fixes and addressing other major issues. So if you decide to stick with these versions—which is a completely reasonable choice if they work well for you—you might want to learn how to update your system software without jumping to macOS Ventura.
How to Install the Latest macOS Updates Without Upgrading to MacOS Ventura
You can apply macOS updates and skip macOS Ventura for both MacOS Monterey and MacOS Big Sur:
Click on the ? Apple menu in the upper left corner and select “System Preferences”
Open “Software Update”
Look for the small blue text labeled “More Info…” beneath the tiny message 'Other updates are available', located below the Ventura banner, and click on it
Select the software updates you’d like to install, then click “Install Now”
As usual, your Mac will restart when installing any system software update or point release. However, as long as you've followed the steps correctly, you'll simply install the latest updates for your current macOS version rather than moving to macOS Ventura.
In this example, macOS Ventura is skipped in favor of installing macOS Monterey 12.6.1 as a standard software update. This same approach applies to future updates, whether it’s macOS Monterey 12.6.2, 12.6.3, 12.6.4, 12.6.5, macOS Monterey 12.7, or any other releases Apple rolls out.
You can also perform these updates through the command line by using the softwareupdate command, if that's more convenient for you.
What if I want to upgrade from MacOS Catalina, Big Sur, to Monterey, and avoid Ventura?
If you're currently running an earlier macOS version like Catalina or Big Sur and would prefer to upgrade to macOS Monterey instead of macOS Ventura, you absolutely can do that. The simplest way to achieve this is by downloading a macOS installer specifically for Monterey (or whichever version you wish to install) and running it directly. Make sure to back up your Mac first to protect your data and allow for easy recovery if necessary.
