Google Messages gets a much-needed customization boost! Two highly anticipated features are arriving: group chat icon customization and a "delete for everyone" option for RCS messages.
These improvements address long-standing user complaints about the app's limited personalization options compared to competitors.
Customize Your Group Chats:
One of the biggest frustrations with Google Messages has been the generic group chat icons. The beta version now offers a solution! A new pencil icon lets you personalize group chat icons with custom images from your Google Photos, device photos, or a wide range of Google-provided illustrations. While still in beta (and currently lacking a way to revert to the default), this highly requested feature signifies a significant step towards improved usability.
Unsend Messages with "Delete for Everyone":
The ability to unsend RCS messages is finally rolling out. While previously you could only delete a message from your own view, the new "Delete for everyone" option removes the message for all participants in the chat (though Google notes it might still be visible to users with older app versions). This feature, initially spotted in February, is reported to be working best in larger group chats (over 10 users). You have a 15-minute window to utilize this "unsend" functionality.
