If you actually had to look up what "DS" stands for in Nintendo DS, that probably means you weren't a huge fan of the portable game system. To be honest, I never was. It's fairly bulky and has two tiny displays.
Despite my dislike for the DS, Nintendo still managed to deliver some solid games. Mario Kart DS, Pokémon SoulSilver, and New Super Mario Bros. are just a few examples.
In today's softModder guide, I'm going to show you how to get these and other DS games on your Samsung Galaxy S3 or any Android device so you can play them anytime—without carrying around the extra hardware.
Download a DS Emulator
To play Nintendo DS games on your GS3, you'll need to download nds4droid (by Jeffrey Quesnelle) from the Google Play Store.
There are other Nintendo DS emulators available on Google Play, but most cost over 7 dollars. Nds4droid is free and still allows you to save your progress, which is usually a paid feature.
Download a Nintendo DS Game ROM
Like with any console emulator, nds4droid doesn't come with built-in games. That means you’ll have to either convert your own DS cartridges or find pre-converted ROMs online. Just search the web for the ROM you want and download it directly to your GS3.
Make sure the file is an .nds, or a .zip, .7z, or .rar archive containing an .nds file inside. The emulator will extract it and load the first .nds file found.
Keep in mind: You should already legally own a copy of the game before downloading its ROM.
Load Your Game
Once you've downloaded your ROM(s), open the nds4droid app. Upon launching, it should automatically detect and list all your available ROMs. Simply select the one you want to play and start it up.
Play Your DS Games
You can choose to play in vertical or horizontal orientation—it’s entirely up to you. I prefer horizontal mode. You'll also see the game split across two screens, mimicking the original DS design. Tap the small gray button to toggle between touchscreen controls and standard buttons.
I did notice some performance issues while playing Mario Kart DS, but I was still able to complete the Grand Prix without too much trouble. For smoother gameplay, try turning off the sound. This reduces the emulation load, letting the app focus more on running the game instead of handling both visuals and audio.
