Streaming services like Netflix and Hulu offer vast libraries, but their content is constantly changing due to licensing agreements. To ensure access to your favorite movies and shows, consider buying digital copies or creating your own home streaming server. This involves transforming your computer into a server, delivering content to various client devices (phones, game consoles, etc.).
Setting up a home streaming server is easier than ever thanks to modern operating systems and third-party apps. Let's explore how to get started.
Getting Started: Preparation
First, convert your movies and TV shows into a universal format like MP4 using a free tool like Handbrake (content acquisition is subject to your conscience and local copyright laws).
Next, identify your target client devices (Xbox, Apple TV, phone, etc.). This will influence your server setup. For example, an Xbox One works best with a Windows server, while an Apple TV pairs well with macOS.
The streaming method varies depending on your operating system (Windows, macOS) or preferred third-party app. We recommend a third-party app for maximum flexibility.
Streaming from Windows
Organize your movies and TV shows in your default "Videos" folder, using folders and subfolders for easy navigation.
Open Control Panel, search for "media streaming options," and enable media streaming. Content in your "Videos" folder will be accessible to devices on your local network.
Many devices (Roku, VLC on Android/iOS) can access these files without further configuration. However, this is limited to your local Wi-Fi network. For internet streaming, see the third-party app section.
For Xbox One streaming (same Wi-Fi network), right-click a video file and select "Cast to Device."
Streaming from macOS
macOS works seamlessly with Apple devices using AirPlay. Click the AirPlay icon in your menu bar, select your Apple TV, and enter the PIN code.
For non-Apple devices, a third-party app is recommended (see below).
Alternatively, a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, like the ZyXEL Personal Cloud Storage Server, can act as a server, even when your computer is off.
Streaming with Plex (and other Third-Party Apps)
Plex (or Kodi, Emby) offers broader compatibility. Create a free account, install the Plex server software, and direct it to your video folders. It works with NAS devices.
Install the Plex client app on your target devices (web browsers, Roku, Apple TV, etc.). Android/iOS clients require a Plex Pass subscription ($5/month or $40/year), which also unlocks cloud server options and other features.
Plex handles the streaming process, enabling smooth playback. With sufficient upload speeds, you can stream to devices outside your home network, just like Netflix.
