An old 1-penny coin has made a man a millionaire after he sold the rare piece at an auction. The person shared details about the auction of this unique coin on TikTok. He revealed how the rare coin of 1933 was sold for 140,000 pounds, which is around Rs 1.49 crore. Taking to CoinCollectingWizard, he discussed his latest discovery with an auctioneer.
The man said, “This is my collection, which has been very kindly lent. It is great because it is such a prestigious coin that many people come to see it.” He further added, “Usually these coins disappear into the vaults and are never seen again. The last time it was sold was in 2016 for about Rs 1.5 crore. Before this, the coin kept selling for many years, and one can imagine that if it comes back in the market, it will sell for even more.”
Then, as the man unveiled his piece, the poster added, “This is a 1933 predecimal penny from the U.K.” He asked, “Do you have this 1933 coin? If yes, you are rich, there are other dates to look at, but it will never be worth the insane value of the 1933 penny because there are only seven known coins. So if you find one, you are very lucky.”
The caption read, “Holy Grail 1933 Predecimal Penny,” garnering over 1,120 likes and hundreds of comments.
One curious user questioned, “How many do you know of?” to which another replied, “Only 6.” Yet another added, “We had one about 10 years ago, but it got lost.”
