I adore my Samsung Galaxy S25 – its battery life is phenomenal, it's highly customizable, and incredibly responsive. However, it's not without its flaws. This prompted a nostalgic look back at my old Galaxy S8, revealing some surprising areas where the 2017 model actually outshone its modern counterpart.
1. In-Box Charger:
Samsung's decision to omit the charger from the S25 box, citing environmental concerns, is understandable. Most users likely possess a suitable charger. However, the optimal charging speed for the S25 (25W for the base model, 45W for Plus and Ultra) might not be matched by existing chargers. The need for a travel charger or a replacement for a lost one also adds to the inconvenience. The S8, in contrast, included everything needed right out of the box.
2. LED Notifications:
The S8's top-left LED indicator provided clear, persistent visual notifications, even with the screen off. While the S25's Always-On Display offers some functionality, it doesn't provide the same immediate visual cue of a blinking LED. Third-party apps like aodNotify offer a solution, but a built-in option would be preferable.
3. Headphone Jack:
The S8's 3.5mm headphone jack, a feature absent from the S25, offers undeniable convenience. While wireless earbuds are popular, the jack allows for immediate use of any wired headphones without charging concerns or adapters.
While I personally appreciate my Samsung Galaxy Buds, the flexibility of the 3.5mm port is missed by many.
4. Expandable Storage:
The S8's microSD card slot allowed for storage expansion up to 256GB, a valuable feature absent in the S25. While cloud storage is an alternative, the physical expansion provided by the microSD card offered a convenient solution for users exceeding their internal storage.
5. Curved Screen:
The S8's curved "infinity display" remains visually striking, enhancing both aesthetics and ergonomics. The curved edges facilitated comfortable handling and easy access to Edge Panels. While the S25's display is excellent, it lacks the unique visual appeal and distinctive design of the S8's curved screen.
This isn't to advocate for the S8 over the S25; the latter boasts superior security updates and app compatibility. However, reflecting on the S8 highlights features lost in the pursuit of newer technologies.
