1. Stolen Device Protection

The standout feature in the iOS 17.3 update is Stolen Device Protection. This adds an extra layer of security to safeguard against someone accessing your passcode if they acquire your iPhone. Previously, all a thief needed was the passcode to reset your Apple ID password, disable Find My iPhone, and access your iCloud Keychain-stored credentials, among other actions.

With Stolen Device Protection activated through Settings → Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) → Turn On Protection, you must authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID to carry out specific tasks on the device. Using your passcode as a fallback option isn’t possible when biometric verification fails.

For heightened security, more impactful actions necessitate a one-hour waiting period post-authentication when performed in unfamiliar locations. These actions encompass:

• Changing your Apple ID password.
• Modifying select Apple ID account security settings, such as adding/removing a trusted device, trusted phone number, Recovery Key, or Recovery Contact.
• Changing your iPhone passcode.
• Adding/removing Face ID or Touch ID.
• Deactivating Find My.
• Disabling Stolen Device Protection.

2. Apple Music Playlist Collaboration

Playlist collaboration, allowing you to co-create playlists with family and friends on Apple Music, briefly appeared during the iOS 17.2 betas before being removed. Fortunately, iOS 17.3 reintroduces it. Collaborators must run iOS 17.3, iPadOS 17.3, or macOS 14.3 Sonoma with "Synced Library" enabled. It even works on Android!

Playlist owners can approve collaborators or allow anyone with the playlist link to join automatically. Collaborators can add, reorder, and remove tracks, and their profile picture appears beside added songs so everyone knows who contributed what. February marks Black History Month. To celebrate Black history and culture, Apple has introduced a new Unity wallpaper on iOS 17.3 titled "which displays an outline of flowers that fill with color when the screen lights up." You can set the new wallpaper from your Lock Screen or Settings → Wallpaper.

Blooming flowers and vibrant hues symbolize Pan-Africanism and signify generations uniting to confront injustice and dismantle systemic barriers.

4. Updated Navigation Buttons in Apple TV

The TV app's navigation buttons underwent minor changes on iOS 17.2. However, Apple wasn’t fully satisfied with the visual tweaks, leading to further adjustments in iOS 17.3.

• The "Home" tab's button now features a house icon rather than a play icon inside a rectangle.
• The "Apple TV+" tab replaces the "tv+" text on the rectangular button with just the Apple logo. This change seemed logical since the button and its label were redundant.
• The "Library" tab removes the play icon from the stack icon.

5. Spatial Video Overlay Description

Apple Vision Pro, Apple's $3,499 mixed reality headset, is set for release on February 2 in the U.S. (pre-orders began January 19). However, Apple previewed its Spatial Video for Apple Vision Pro early with the Camera app's iOS 17.2 update for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

With iOS 17.3, Apple continues refining Spatial Video ahead of the headset's debut. Activating Spatial Video in Camera now displays an overlay providing basic information about it along with a link to learn more.
