If you've been eagerly anticipating the chance to enjoy the timeless charm of Tamagotchi in a 3D setting, then Tamagotchi Plaza is definitely worth your attention! Channeling the simple joy of the Nintendo DS version, Tamagotchi Plaza delivers exactly what longtime fans have hoped for: more console-based fun with those familiar "tchi"-named companions.
Tamagotchi Plaza is a fairly straightforward game, but that doesn’t mean there aren't a few important things to keep in mind from the moment you're whisked away from Earth and dropped onto a planet full of chatty animals preparing for a festival. Here are some helpful tips to get you started!
Mind The Tchi
Once you pick a name for your character, you won’t be able to change it later—standard practice in many games. What's different here is that the suffix "-tchi" will automatically be added at the end of whatever name you choose.
It’s made somewhat clear in the game, though I’ve seen some confusion about this. On the name selection screen, you’ll see the section where you input your name, and further to the right, "-tchi" is already displayed.
Just remember, no matter what name you go with, those four letters will always follow it. My real name is Quinton, and I decided to use it in-game, but if I hadn't been careful, I would have ended up as Quintontchi. Not a bad name per se, but not one I liked. So instead, I went with Quintochi by typing in "Quinto" rather than "Quinton."
You Didn't Miss A Tutorial Somewhere
At the heart of Tamagotchi Plaza is its collection of minigames, ten on the Switch version and thirteen on Switch 2. Playing these regularly makes up the bulk of your gameplay time, and eventually, you'll get pretty good at them all.
That said, they might seem completely confusing at first—and for good reason. There's usually no tutorial or explanation given. Don't worry, you didn’t skip anything—you were just thrown straight into the action. Do your best to figure out what's going on, but don't stress too much, because...
Failure Is Your Friend
Or at least, it should be. You probably won't ace every minigame on your first try, not necessarily because they’re hard, but because, again, there’s little to no guidance provided. (I personally found the tea shop minigame quite confusing at first, though your experience may differ.)
Just roll with it, honestly. There's no Game Over screen or anything like that. At worst, you’ll earn just one star—or even none—on the three-star rating system featured in most of the minigames. It’s okay, really! You’ll improve soon enough.
Even after failing multiple times before figuring something out, your shops won't lose any reputation points. They simply won’t gain any until you start performing better. No big deal.
Scroll Right, Save A Life
I mentioned how tricky I found the tea shop minigame during my early attempts. A big part of that struggle was due to my failure to realize that additional table placement options could be accessed by pressing the right analog stick repeatedly to scroll through more choices.
And the tea shop isn’t the only minigame like that. Many others in Tamagotchi Plaza feature a variety of selectable items that you won’t notice unless you scroll further to the right, which reveals extra entries in the list.
Once I figured this out, my performance improved instantly, because now I had access to the very tools the game expected me to use.
We’ll share more tips as we dive deeper into Tamagotchi Plaza, but I wanted to pass along these early suggestions as quickly as possible for all you new plaza explorers out there!
