Microsoft built a bloat-free, optimized Windows 11 UI for handheld gaming
Jun 27, 2025 am 01:05 AMMicrosoft has created a new version of Windows 11 tailored specifically for handheld gaming devices. This optimized version not only features a redesigned interface but also performs better due to the removal of unnecessary software. However, this new gaming-focused UI is exclusive to handheld devices and won’t be introduced as a “Game mode” for desktop systems—at least for now.
The new Windows 11 interface for handhelds was showcased in a YouTube teaser video for the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. While we don't get an in-depth look at the software, the teaser offers a glimpse into what users can expect.
For instance, it’s confirmed that the new Xbox handheld device will boot directly into a full-screen gaming interface (known as Game Bar), replacing the standard Windows 11 desktop experience. By default, you won’t see the traditional desktop, taskbar, or features like the notification center.

On handheld devices, Game Bar functions as a controller-friendly hub, offering access to performance monitoring, messaging, network settings, volume controls, and app launching—including apps like Discord.
A refreshed taskbar and top bar
The handheld version of Windows 11 still includes a taskbar, although it looks quite different from the standard desktop version. It's simpler and thinner, designed to help users quickly access the Xbox environment or the Start menu. Unlike the desktop taskbar, it doesn’t display multiple small icons for running apps.
Windows Latest also observed that the handheld UI uses rounded app icons positioned at the top of the screen for easy access.
While the standard Windows 11 desktop doesn’t feature a “top bar,” such a design was considered during development. Although it never made it to the desktop version, it has now been repurposed for use on the Xbox handheld PC.
On laptops or desktops, users typically start at the wallpaper, open the Start menu, deal with system tray icons, and manage notifications while playing games. The task switcher is designed for mouse usage, and Game Bar floats above the full Windows interface stack.
These elements are not part of the default user experience on handheld devices.
As a result, the Xbox UI should feel slightly faster and more efficient, using less memory. Since many Windows 11 processes, background apps, and features won’t run by default, more memory becomes available for gaming performance.
