Laravel development: How to import and export CSV files using Laravel Excel?

excel laravel csv

Laravel is one of the outstanding PHP frameworks in the industry. Its powerful functions and easy-to-use API make it very popular among developers. In actual development, we often need to import and export data, and CSV, as a widely used data format, has also become one of the commonly used import and export formats. This article will introduce how to use the Laravel Excel extension to import and export CSV files.

1. Install Laravel Excel

First, we need to use Composer to install Laravel Excel:

composer require maatwebsite/excel

After the installation is complete, we need to add in the config/app.php file Add the following code to the providers array:

MaatwebsiteExcelExcelServiceProvider::class,

Add the following code to the aliases array:

'Excel' => MaatwebsiteExcelFacadesExcel::class,

2. Export the CSV file

Suppose we have a user model User, which has A getExportData() method that returns the data to be exported. Then we can write the export code like this:

use MaatwebsiteExcelFacadesExcel;
use AppModelsUser;

class UserController extends Controller
{
    public function exportUsers()
    {
        return Excel::download(new UserExport(), 'users.csv');
    }
}

class UserExport implements FromQuery, WithHeadings
{
    public function query()
    {
        return User::query();
    }

    public function headings(): array
    {
        return [
            'ID',
            'Name',
            'Email',
            'Created At',
            'Updated At',
        ];
    }
}

In the above code, we use Laravel Excel’s FromQuery and WithHeadings interfaces to quickly export data to a CSV file. The FromQuery interface needs to implement a query() method to return the data set to be exported; the WithHeadings interface needs to implement a headings() method to return the header information of the CSV file. In the export operation, we use the Excel::download() method to download, passing in two parameters: the export class UserExport and the file name users.csv.

When users access this route, they can directly download the exported CSV file.

3. Import CSV files

To import CSV files, we need to write an import class and implement the FromCollection interface.

Suppose we have a User import model with an importUsers() method that accepts an uploaded CSV file and imports the data into the database. We can write like this:

use MaatwebsiteExcelFacadesExcel;
use AppModelsUser;

class UserController extends Controller
{
    public function importUsers(Request $request)
    {
        $request->validate([
            'file' => 'required|mimes:csv,txt',
        ]);

        $path = $request->file('file')->getRealPath();
        $data = Excel::import(new UserImport(), $path);

        return redirect()->back()->with('success', '導入成功');
    }
}

class UserImport implements FromCollection
{
    public function collection(Collection $rows)
    {
        foreach ($rows as $row) {
            User::create([
                'name' => $row[0],
                'email' => $row[1],
            ]);
        }
    }
}

In the above code, we define a UserImport class and implement the FromCollection interface. The collection() method here is used to process the data imported from the CSV file and convert it into a Collection object. In this example, we simply create a user and use the first column in the file as the username and the second column as the email address.

When implementing the import function, we need to use the Excel::import() method to pass in the import class and file path. This method will return an array of imported data, which we can pass into other processors.

4. Summary

Using the Laravel Excel extension, we can easily import and export CSV data into Laravel applications. In the above example, we used the FromQuery, WithHeadings and FromCollection interfaces to export and import data. Of course, Laravel Excel also supports other interfaces, such as FromArray, WithTitle, WithMapping, etc. In actual projects, we can choose the appropriate interface to complete specific data import and export work based on actual needs.

What is Configuration Caching in Laravel? What is Configuration Caching in Laravel? Jul 27, 2025 am 03:54 AM

Laravel's configuration cache improves performance by merging all configuration files into a single cache file. Enabling configuration cache in a production environment can reduce I/O operations and file parsing on each request, thereby speeding up configuration loading; 1. It should be enabled when the application is deployed, the configuration is stable and no frequent changes are required; 2. After enabling, modify the configuration, you need to re-run phpartisanconfig:cache to take effect; 3. Avoid using dynamic logic or closures that depend on runtime conditions in the configuration file; 4. When troubleshooting problems, you should first clear the cache, check the .env variables and re-cache.

Explain Laravel Eloquent Scopes. Explain Laravel Eloquent Scopes. Jul 26, 2025 am 07:22 AM

Laravel's EloquentScopes is a tool that encapsulates common query logic, divided into local scope and global scope. 1. The local scope is defined with a method starting with scope and needs to be called explicitly, such as Post::published(); 2. The global scope is automatically applied to all queries, often used for soft deletion or multi-tenant systems, and the Scope interface needs to be implemented and registered in the model; 3. The scope can be equipped with parameters, such as filtering articles by year or month, and corresponding parameters are passed in when calling; 4. Pay attention to naming specifications, chain calls, temporary disabling and combination expansion when using to improve code clarity and reusability.

How to implement a referral system in Laravel? How to implement a referral system in Laravel? Aug 02, 2025 am 06:55 AM

Create referrals table to record recommendation relationships, including referrals, referrals, recommendation codes and usage time; 2. Define belongsToMany and hasMany relationships in the User model to manage recommendation data; 3. Generate a unique recommendation code when registering (can be implemented through model events); 4. Capture the recommendation code by querying parameters during registration, establish a recommendation relationship after verification and prevent self-recommendation; 5. Trigger the reward mechanism when recommended users complete the specified behavior (subscription order); 6. Generate shareable recommendation links, and use Laravel signature URLs to enhance security; 7. Display recommendation statistics on the dashboard, such as the total number of recommendations and converted numbers; it is necessary to ensure database constraints, sessions or cookies are persisted,

Using Events and Listeners in Laravel. Using Events and Listeners in Laravel. Jul 26, 2025 am 08:21 AM

Using events and listeners in Laravel is an effective way to decouple main logic. 1. Create events and listeners can be generated and bound to EventServiceProvider through the Artisan command or enable the automatic discovery mechanism. 2. In actual use, it is necessary to note that an event can correspond to multiple listeners, queue failure retry policy, keep the listener lightweight, and register event subscribers. 3. During testing and debugging, you should confirm the event triggering, listener binding, and queue drive status, and set QUEUE_CONNECTION=sync to perform synchronously to facilitate troubleshooting. 4. Advanced tips include dynamically controlling the execution or registration of the listener according to conditions, but it is recommended to advanced users. Mastering these key points can help improve code control
