News on June 8th, the openSUSE project released the new openSUSE Leap today Version 15.5, brings the latest stability to openSUSE variants.
openSUSE Leap 15.5 is an important update based on the openSUSE Leap 15.4 version released last year. This version is built on SUSE Linux On top of the binary package of the Enterprise 15 SP5 operating system, and equipped with the same Linux as Leap 15.4 The 5.14 kernel also adds hardware-specific drivers to provide better compatibility and support.
According to the editor’s understanding, the openSUSE Project will integrate the Linux 5.14 kernel included in openSUSE Leap 15.5 with the upstream Linux 6.0 kernel series were compared. They pointed out that in terms of GPU drivers, Leap 15.5 brings some important improvements, such as improvements to AMD Radeon RX 7600, AMD Support for Radeon RX 7900 XT/XTX and new graphics cards such as Intel ARC A380, ARC A750 and ARC A770.
In addition, openSUSE Leap 15.5 also comes with pre-installed support for NVMe-oF (NVM Express over Fabrics) support, compliant with NVMe-oF boot specification 1.0. By using TCP transport, users can flexibly create and manage diskless clients in a SAN environment. This feature requires system UEFI BIOS support, with both network and NVMe-oF targets configured. The firmware will use this information to boot the kernel, and the operating system will obtain the configuration information from the firmware to install the root file system through NVMe-oF.
On the software side, openSUSE Leap 15.5 provides the latest KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS desktop environment series and Xfce 4.18 desktop environment series. For users of the GNOME desktop environment, this version still uses the GNOME 41 series from openSUSE Leap 15.4.
openSUSE Leap 15.5 does not use some of the latest GNU/Linux technologies, such as openSUSE Tumbleweed. it is powered by dnf 4.10.0 package manager, systemd 249.10 init system, Mesa 22.3.5 graphics stack, and sudo 1.9.9, AppArmor 3.0.4, Perl 5.26.1, Python 3.6.15, etc. At the same time, this version also supports Python 3.9, 3.10 and 3.11, and provides Ruby 2.5, Go 1.17, Podman 4.4.4, CRI-O 1.22.0 and containerd 1.6.19 and other software.
openSUSE Leap 15.5 is now available for download on the official website, and users can choose to include KDE Live ISO images for Plasma, GNOME and Xfce desktop environments, as well as rescue and offline installation images. For users who virtualize openSUSE Leap, you can also download the virtual machine image.
In addition, the openSUSE Project also announced plans to release another minor version of Leap 15, openSUSE Leap 15.6, in early June 2024.
