How to delete files and directories in java

delete() method can be used to delete files or empty directories/folders. If the file is deleted, the delete() method returns true if the file does not exist. Return false.

If the directory is deleted, the delete() method checks whether the directory is empty. If the directory is empty, delete the directory, otherwise the delete() method will not perform any operation and return false, so In this case, all files must be deleted recursively and then the directory.

Another way to delete a non-empty directory is to use the Files.walkFileTree() method, in which all files can be processed one by one and called # on a single file object ##delete()Method.

Delete file example:

package com.journaldev.files;import java.io.File;public class DeleteFileJava {
    /**
     * 此類顯示如何在Java中刪除文件
     * @param args
     */
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        // 帶路徑的文件名
        File file = new File("tmp/tmp2/file.txt");
        if(file.delete()){
            System.out.println("tmp/tmp2/file.txt File deleted");
        }else System.out.println("File tmp/tmp2/file.txt doesn't exist");
        // 只提供文件名稱
        file = new File("file.txt");
        if(file.delete()){
            System.out.println("file.txt File deleted from Project root directory");
        }else System.out.println("File file.txt doesn't exist in the project root directory");
        //relative path
        file = new File("temp/file.txt");
        if(file.delete()){
            System.out.println("temp/file.txt File deleted from Project root directory");
        }else System.out.println("File temp/file.txt doesn't exist in the project root directory");
        // 刪除空的目錄
        file = new File("temp");
        if(file.delete()){
            System.out.println("temp directory deleted from Project root directory");
        }else System.out.println("temp directory doesn't exist or not empty in the project root directory");
        // 試圖刪除非空目錄
        file = new File("D:/user/maxsu/project");
        if(file.delete()){
            System.out.println("D:/user/maxsu/project directory deleted from Project root directory");
        }else System.out.println("D:/user/maxsu/project directory doesn't exist or not empty");
    }}

Note: Unlike createNewFile(), the delete method does not throw an IOException.

The following is a simple program that demonstrates how to delete a non-empty directory. If the directory contains files, deleting the directory will not succeed.

Example of deleting a directory:

import java.io.File;public class JavaDeleteDirectory {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        File dir = new File("D:/worksp/java/log");
        if(dir.isDirectory() == false) {
            System.out.println("Not a directory. Do nothing");
            return;
        }
        File[] listFiles = dir.listFiles();
        for(File file : listFiles){
            System.out.println("Deleting "+file.getName());
            file.delete();
        }
        //現(xiàn)在目錄為空,所以可以刪除它
        System.out.println("Deleting Directory. Success = "+dir.delete());
    }}

Example of deleting a directory recursively:

import java.io.IOException;
import java.nio.file.FileVisitResult;
import java.nio.file.Files;
import java.nio.file.Path;
import java.nio.file.Paths;
import java.nio.file.SimpleFileVisitor;
import java.nio.file.attribute.BasicFileAttributes;
public class JavaDeleteDirectoryRecursively {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
        Path directory = Paths.get("D:/worksp/maxsu/log");
        Files.walkFileTree(directory, new SimpleFileVisitor<Path>() {
           @Override
           public FileVisitResult visitFile(Path file, BasicFileAttributes attributes) throws IOException {
               Files.delete(file); // 有效,因為它始終是一個文件
               return FileVisitResult.CONTINUE;
           }
           @Override
           public FileVisitResult postVisitDirectory(Path dir, IOException exc) throws IOException {
               Files.delete(dir); //這將起作用,因為目錄中的文件已被刪除
               return FileVisitResult.CONTINUE;
           }
        });
    }}

How to handle transactions in Java with JDBC? How to handle transactions in Java with JDBC? Aug 02, 2025 pm 12:29 PM

To correctly handle JDBC transactions, you must first turn off the automatic commit mode, then perform multiple operations, and finally commit or rollback according to the results; 1. Call conn.setAutoCommit(false) to start the transaction; 2. Execute multiple SQL operations, such as INSERT and UPDATE; 3. Call conn.commit() if all operations are successful, and call conn.rollback() if an exception occurs to ensure data consistency; at the same time, try-with-resources should be used to manage resources, properly handle exceptions and close connections to avoid connection leakage; in addition, it is recommended to use connection pools and set save points to achieve partial rollback, and keep transactions as short as possible to improve performance.

How to work with Calendar in Java? How to work with Calendar in Java? Aug 02, 2025 am 02:38 AM

Use classes in the java.time package to replace the old Date and Calendar classes; 2. Get the current date and time through LocalDate, LocalDateTime and LocalTime; 3. Create a specific date and time using the of() method; 4. Use the plus/minus method to immutably increase and decrease the time; 5. Use ZonedDateTime and ZoneId to process the time zone; 6. Format and parse date strings through DateTimeFormatter; 7. Use Instant to be compatible with the old date types when necessary; date processing in modern Java should give priority to using java.timeAPI, which provides clear, immutable and linear

How does garbage collection work in Java? How does garbage collection work in Java? Aug 02, 2025 pm 01:55 PM

Java's garbage collection (GC) is a mechanism that automatically manages memory, which reduces the risk of memory leakage by reclaiming unreachable objects. 1.GC judges the accessibility of the object from the root object (such as stack variables, active threads, static fields, etc.), and unreachable objects are marked as garbage. 2. Based on the mark-clearing algorithm, mark all reachable objects and clear unmarked objects. 3. Adopt a generational collection strategy: the new generation (Eden, S0, S1) frequently executes MinorGC; the elderly performs less but takes longer to perform MajorGC; Metaspace stores class metadata. 4. JVM provides a variety of GC devices: SerialGC is suitable for small applications; ParallelGC improves throughput; CMS reduces

go by example defer statement explained go by example defer statement explained Aug 02, 2025 am 06:26 AM

defer is used to perform specified operations before the function returns, such as cleaning resources; parameters are evaluated immediately when defer, and the functions are executed in the order of last-in-first-out (LIFO); 1. Multiple defers are executed in reverse order of declarations; 2. Commonly used for secure cleaning such as file closing; 3. The named return value can be modified; 4. It will be executed even if panic occurs, suitable for recovery; 5. Avoid abuse of defer in loops to prevent resource leakage; correct use can improve code security and readability.

Java Concurrency Utilities: ExecutorService and Fork/Join Java Concurrency Utilities: ExecutorService and Fork/Join Aug 03, 2025 am 01:54 AM

ExecutorService is suitable for asynchronous execution of independent tasks, such as I/O operations or timing tasks, using thread pool to manage concurrency, submit Runnable or Callable tasks through submit, and obtain results with Future. Pay attention to the risk of unbounded queues and explicitly close the thread pool; 2. The Fork/Join framework is designed for split-and-governance CPU-intensive tasks, based on partitioning and controversy methods and work-stealing algorithms, and realizes recursive splitting of tasks through RecursiveTask or RecursiveAction, which is scheduled and executed by ForkJoinPool. It is suitable for large array summation and sorting scenarios. The split threshold should be set reasonably to avoid overhead; 3. Selection basis: Independent
