Introduction
ASUS, widely regarded as the leading PC component manufacturer globally, made history by being the first major brand to challenge Valve’s Steam Deck with the launch of the original ROG Ally. Two years on, that bold move has clearly paid off—the ROG Ally now stands as the top-selling Windows-based handheld gaming device. A year after its initial release, ASUS upped the ante with the enhanced ROG Ally X, offering notable upgrades for a more refined experience.
It's no exaggeration to say we've arrived late to reviewing the ROG Ally X. Nevertheless, having now received a review unit for inclusion in our handheld performance comparisons, it’s only right to put it through our full battery of tests and benchmarks. We’ll assess its current performance, see how it stacks up in today’s market, and determine if it still holds the crown as the premier Windows handheld for serious gamers.
Powering the device is AMD’s Z1 Extreme APU, which integrates eight Zen 4 CPU cores with 16 MB of L3 cache, a base frequency of 3.3 GHz, and a peak boost clock of 5.1 GHz. On the graphics side, it features the Radeon 780M iGPU, built on RDNA 3 architecture with 12 compute units. Together with 24 GB of shared LPDDR5X memory, this APU continues to deliver strong performance, even though it debuted over two years ago.
Beyond the processor, the ROG Ally X boasts an impressive 80 Wh battery, a vibrant 7-inch display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and VRR support, and faster 7500 MT/s memory. It also improves upon the original model with better ergonomics and added features. Our review unit includes 1 TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage in the standard M.2 2280 form factor, RGB-illuminated thumbsticks, dual USB ports (including a full USB4), and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity. Before diving into the unboxing, we’d like to extend our thanks to ASUS for supplying the review sample.
