After playing Umamusume: Pretty Derby for a little while, you'll quickly realize that most of your gameplay will revolve around training your characters through the career mode. Once you go through a career run with your character, it gets saved and you can use it in other modes like the story mode or team trials.
If you want to compete against other players in the team trial, you'll have to constantly train your characters and raise their overall tiers and effectiveness. However, this can be quite a challenging task, especially if you don't know exactly what you're doing.
Legacy And Support Cards, Explained
Once you launch Umamusume: Pretty Derby, you can see the career option on the bottom right of the home screen. This area lets you enter the training mode where you first have to select the character you want to train. Each character has a tier rating determining how good they are with each type of track, race distance, and strategy.
Ideally, you'll need a top-tier trained Umamusume in each distance type and one for the dirt track type. Before selecting the character you want to train, head over to your team in the team trial races and look for the type you need the most. Once you've decided on the character, you also have to choose their legacy and support cards before starting your training.
The Basics Of Training Your CharacterTo train your character properly in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, you first have to understand all the options on the training screen. You need to pay attention to all these options, but the amount of attention required can vary based on how far into the run you are. Here are the most important bits of the training screen:
Type |
Description |
---|---|
Turns Left |
You can see the number of turns you have left for your next goal on the top left of your screen. It's important to keep track of this since you'll have to make various decisions based on how far away you are from your next important race. |
Goal |
You can see your current goal to the right of the turns left icon on the screen. This will show what your next race is, along with the criteria you need to fulfil, which usually refers to a certain number of fans. |
Training And Stats |
You can see your current stats and the big training option right below your Umamusume. You can take part in training to upgrade these stats, and you can get various buffs to these upgrades depending on your support characters. |
Skill Points |
You can gain skill points by winning races and other random events throughout your run. These points can be used to get various skills in the respective menu, but it's important to upgrade your skills at the right time (more on this below). |
Rest, Infirmary, And Recreation |
You can see your character's current energy and mood at the top of your screen. If either of these is low, you can take part in the Rest and Recreation section to increase them, respectively. |
Current Year |
Each training career spans three years, and you can identify the current year by looking right above your turn left section. The years go in this order: Junior Year, Classic Year, and Senior Year. |
Full Stats |
Finally, you can see the full stats option right above where your skill points are displayed. This will help you look at the negative effects on your characters, what they do, and all the skills you currently have on them. |
As you train your character through different years, you'll constantly be triggering a bunch of events that can give you various buffs and, in some cases, even nerf your character by reducing their moods or stats and giving them negative effects. Some permanent events are bound to happen each run, and some random events trigger based on your support cards.
Out of the permanent events, there are quite a few important ones that you have to keep track of in each run, regardless of the type of race you're aiming for. Here are all such events:
Training Upgrades |
Whenever you take part in a specific training type after getting the director as your support during the run, she'll upgrade this training type. This will boost the stats you get from this type of training. |
---|---|
Summer Break |
The summer break happens at the start of July in your Classic and Senior Years, and it lasts for four turns. During this, all your trainings get boosted, and you can raise your stats massively by taking part in them. |
Inspiration |
This can trigger at specific times during your run, and it essentially gives you a ton of stat boosts and skills based on your legacy cards. It's important to wait until these Inspirations before you upgrade your skills. |
G1 Races |
During the last year, you can get a bunch of G1 random races that can boost your fan count by over 40,000 if you get first position. It's important to take some time and participate in these so that you can have a high fan count by the end. |
Yearly Guide To Training Your Character
Now that you understand the basics of training in Umamusume: Pretty Derby and the events you need to look out for, it's important to get a general idea of what you should do during your training as well. However, your tasks will change drastically based on the year you're on, so here's everything you can do in each year:
Junior Year Guide
When you first start your run, the initial goal for your character will be to participate in the Junior Debut race. However, at this point, upgrading your support cards takes priority over your stats. Look for the trainings with two or more support cards on the top right and use these. You should aim to get to the gold bar on as many support cards as possible.
Classic Year GuideOutside of the important events that start triggering during the second year, you mainly have to focus on upgrading your stats. Ideally, you'd want to get the most important stats to at least a B or A tier by the time this year ends. This will set you up nicely for the long run. It's also important to ensure that you get a high ranking on all your career races here.
You can also start getting a few skills on your character during this once your first Inspiration triggers as well.
Senior Year Guide
Finally, the last year will mainly focus on fully upgrading your stats to the desired level and slowly getting all the skills you need for your character. It's important to take part in G1 races whenever you can during this year to get a high fan count and some extra skill points.
