One Of The Best Action Movies Ever Made Lands On Netflix Today
Jul 11, 2025 am 12:46 AMIf you're a fan of high-octane desert car chases set in a post-apocalyptic world, populated by eccentric characters, huge explosions, and some of the most thrilling action ever captured on film, then Mad Max: Fury Road is the movie for you. George Miller’s incredible action epic arrives on Netflix today.
It's hard to believe that this film is already ten years old. I vividly recall watching it in theaters ten years ago and being completely awestruck. I've seen it multiple times since, and the sense of amazement never fades. Beyond the heart-pounding, adrenaline-fueled action, there’s something truly special about this movie and the way it was brought to life.
To begin with, director George Miller, along with artists like Brendan McCarthy, crafted 3,500 storyboard panels before any scriptwriting even began. At the time, Miller had only drafted a short outline, but he wanted to visualize the entire film, effectively creating a detailed graphic novel during the process. The final version of the film sticks very closely to those original storyboards.
The concept and initial storyboard work started back in the late '90s, but after 9/11, plans to shoot in Africa were canceled. The production shifted to Australia, only to find the landscape too green due to flooding—far too lush for a Mad Max setting. More than a decade later, filming finally moved to Namibia in 2012. Mel Gibson was initially set to return as Max, but scheduling conflicts made that impossible, so Tom Hardy stepped into the role instead. Charlize Theron was cast as Imperator Furiosa.
The plot centers around Max joining forces with Furiosa to escape the evil warlord Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and his army of War Boys, including Nux (Nicholas Hoult). Furiosa has helped Immortan Joe’s enslaved wives break free, but the tyrant isn’t going to let them go without a fight. What unfolds next is one of the most intense and brilliantly choreographed car chases in cinematic history.
Over 200 wild and bizarre vehicles were built for Fury Road and stored for years until filming commenced. It’s honestly one of the wildest films ever made. While I highly suggest watching it on a 4K Blu-Ray disc—or checking out the black-and-white ‘Black and Chrome’ edition, which is George Miller’s preferred cut—it will still look and sound fantastic on Netflix. In fact, Miller once considered releasing a silent version of the film, though that idea never came to fruition.
Also worth noting is that Netflix is about to remove Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a prequel to Fury Road. Be sure to watch them in the order they were released, as the prequel makes more sense after seeing the original. Although I recommend watching the first three Mad Max films, they aren't required viewing before Fury Road, which essentially serves as a soft reboot rather than a traditional sequel. Personally, I thought Furiosa was outstanding, especially with powerful performances from Anya Taylor-Joy as young Furiosa and Chris Hemsworth as the twisted warlord Dementus—though it still doesn’t quite reach the same heights as Fury Road.
