How to Play Metal Gear Solid & Other Game Boy Color Games on Your Samsung Galaxy S3
Jul 09, 2025 am 01:31 AMIf playing Metal Gear Solid didn't inspire you to start crawling across your living room floor, tossing pretend flash grenades, then I don’t think we were ever meant to be friends. Solid Snake was the ultimate guy. No questions asked.
Over time, Metal Gear has matured and evolved into one of the most cherished video game series of all time. But one of my personal favorites will always be the Game Boy Color version of Metal Gear Solid.
But honestly, who still uses their ancient GBC in a world ruled by smartphones?
For a more convenient way to relive those Solid Snake moments, grab your Samsung Galaxy S3 instead. All it takes to play old Game Boy Color games is the correct emulator and a ROM file for the game.
Download a GBC Emulator
To run Game Boy Color titles on your GS3, you’ll need to download and install Gameboy Color A.D. from the Google Play Store. It’s a completely free emulator developed by BSlapps that allows you to play any Game Boy Color ROM you own.
Finding Your ROM
Keep in mind that like all emulators, Gameboy Color A.D. doesn’t come with any built-in games, so you'll have to source your own ROMs online. Simply search Google for "Game Boy Color ROM" and you'll discover many available titles.
Once you find the one you want (a .ZIP file is ideal), just download it directly onto your GS3.
Legality of Downloading ROMs
ROMs are essentially digital copies of physical games. Unless you already own the original copy of the game you're downloading, I can't really recommend doing so. It's a bit of a legal gray zone. Technically, anyone can download them, but just understand that it might not be entirely above board.
Loading Your GBA Games
Launch Gameboy Color A.D., and you should be taken straight to the Load game screen. From there, locate your downloaded ROM(s) and load them up.
Play!
You have the option to play games in either horizontal or vertical orientation—if you prefer the classic GBC look. Just be careful—if you switch orientations mid-game, the game might restart. That definitely happened when I tried it with Metal Gear Solid.
And that’s all there is to it. If you’re looking for more retro gaming options for your GS3, check out our other softModder guides.
