How to Play Classic Nintendo (NES) Games on Your Samsung Galaxy S3
Jul 07, 2025 am 09:04 AMVideo games are one of the few forms of entertainment that have managed to evolve and stay relevant over the years, while still preserving their classic appeal.
While I'm excitedly waiting for the launch of Grand Theft Auto 5, I still find myself pumped up to play retro Nintendo titles like Double Dragon. Fortunately, I still own an NES, but when I'm away from home, I can enjoy some of my favorite NES games directly on my Samsung Galaxy S3—and you can too.
Download an NES Emulator
To run NES games on our GS3 devices, we need to install an emulator first. In this guide, we'll use Nostalgia NES from Google Play, a free version supported by ads that performs well for our needs and even supports save states.
Keep in mind that in order to manually save your game progress, you must be connected to the internet to view the ads—though the ads won't interrupt gameplay itself.
Download NES Game ROMs
The emulator mentioned above doesn't come with any built-in games, so you’ll need to locate and download them yourself. Simply perform a Google search for NES ROMs or look up your specific game.
Nostalgia is compatible with both compressed (.zip) and decompressed (.nes) files, so as long as they're stored anywhere on your SD card, Nostalgia will detect them. If you'd rather extract them, apps like AndroZip File Manager can help you do that.
Legal Issues
Because of the legal ambiguity surrounding ownership and copyright violations, I cannot recommend downloading ROMs for games you don’t already own. If you have physical copies lying around gathering dust, then great—download the ROMs for those. Otherwise, proceed at your own risk.
Upload Your ROMs to Nostalgia
Once your ROM(s) are on your GS3, open Nostalgia NES and it will automatically scan for compatible ROMs.
Play!
Choose the game you want to play and dive into that '80s nostalgia.
Free vs. Pro Versions
The only distinction between Nostalgia NES and Nostalgia NES Pro is the presence of advertisements. The free version includes ads, while the pro version does not. If ads bother you, you can purchase the pro version for just $0.99, though they really aren't all that intrusive.
