LXLE Review: A Lightweight Linux Distro for Older Computers
Jul 04, 2025 am 09:19 AMWhen you land on the official LXLE website, you’re immediately greeted by its tagline – ‘Revive that Old PC’ – in bold. And that’s precisely what LXLE is all about.
Built upon the Ubuntu/Lubuntu LTS foundation, LXLE is a lightweight Linux distribution designed to be resource-efficient and perfect for older computers or systems with modest hardware specs. In fact, LXLE ranks highly among the top Linux distros suited for outdated machines.
Straight from the start, LXLE comes with a streamlined LXDE desktop environment. This interface is not only light on resources but also clean, elegant, and user-friendly, offering a seamless experience without taxing your system.
LXLE is open source and completely free to download. At the time of writing this article, the most recent version of LXLE available is 18.04.3, which is a Beta or development edition based on Lubuntu 18.04 LTS. It can be downloaded in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
Applications Included with LXLE
This development release has been trimmed down considerably, removing several applications considered unnecessary or rarely used. Some of the key software included are:
- SeaMonkey web browser
- Arista Transcoder
- Audacity
- Guayadeque Music Player
- Parole Media Player
- Pitivi
- Simple Screen Recorder
- Simple Image Reducer
- Document Viewer
- Transmission
- GDebi Package installer
- USB Image writer
- USB Stick Formatter
You can browse through the list of pre-installed apps here.
Minimum System Requirements for LXLE
The installation process for LXLE was very straightforward, with no issues encountered. I tested LXLE using a virtual machine configured with the following specs:
- 1540 MB RAM
- Single Core CPU
- 10 GB storage space
- 16MB graphics memory without 3D acceleration
My Take on LXLE Linux
I spent some time using LXLE, and I was quite pleased with how fast and easy it was to use. The preloaded apps allow you to get started right away. One standout for me was the SeaMonkey browser, which is the default browser bundled with LXLE.
It's quick to load and offers extra features like an email client, HTML editor, chat functionality, and developer tools. Compared to heavier browsers such as Google Chrome, SeaMonkey is much lighter and doesn’t eat up much RAM or CPU power.
Another nice touch I discovered was the weather widget located on the top panel. Clicking on it displays current and past weather data along with the forecast for the next day.
Also worth mentioning is the random wallpaper changer. Clicking on it instantly updates your desktop background with a new, high-quality image. You also get 100 stunning wallpapers already installed by default.
All in all, my experience with LXLE was excellent. It runs quickly and remains stable even on low-end hardware, making it a solid choice for older PCs. If you have an old computer collecting dust somewhere, LXLE might just give it a second life.

When encountering DNS problems, first check the /etc/resolv.conf file to see if the correct nameserver is configured; secondly, you can manually add public DNS such as 8.8.8.8 for testing; then use nslookup and dig commands to verify whether DNS resolution is normal. If these tools are not installed, you can first install the dnsutils or bind-utils package; then check the systemd-resolved service status and configuration file /etc/systemd/resolved.conf, and set DNS and FallbackDNS as needed and restart the service; finally check the network interface status and firewall rules, confirm that port 53 is not
