Removing unnecessary photos not only keeps your Google Photos collection organized and easier to navigate, but it can also help you save money by avoiding costly upgrades to your Google One plan.
As reported by Android Authority*, Google is reportedly working on a new tool designed to assist users in cleaning up their photo collections by automatically recommending images that might be worth deleting. This function will activate when you delete multiple pictures at once.
Google may use a mix of strategies, potentially involving AI, to detect possible deletions—such as blurry or duplicate images, screenshots, and other low-quality visuals—building upon the current “Manage Storage” option.
How Google Photos Will Help You Remove Unwanted Images
This deletion suggestion feature isn’t live yet, but code found in the most recent version of the Google Photos Android app suggests that it could soon recognize when you're trying to delete many pictures simultaneously and begin scanning your library for more content you “might want to delete.”
You’ll then have the option to review these suggested deletions or disable the suggestions entirely to return to the app’s existing behavior.
Here are some of the strings discovered inside the app:
- “We found some photos you might want to delete.”
- “Clean up your library.”
- “Try a new deleting experience when you select and delete %1$d or more photos.”
- “We found more photos you might want to delete.”
- “Review suggestions.”
- “Turn off suggestions.”
In this case, “%1$d” stands for the number of photos you must delete at once to trigger the function. This indicates that Google is testing an optimal limit—likely around ten images—before activating the suggestion system.
Google Photos Automatic Deletion Suggestions: How Might They Function?
Automatically recommending images for removal is a smart move because waiting until storage is almost full before tidying up just delays a task that takes time. It also prevents those last-minute deletions that happen when your storage runs out right when you need to capture something important.
Like any unreleased feature, there's still room for change before this functionality officially launches—if it does at all.
At this point, we don't know if the updated deletion process will identify more types of images than the current Manage Storage tool. Right now, the Manage Storage function only finds files that count toward your Google One storage quota. It doesn’t locate other unwanted images clogging your library.
Still, it’s commendable that Google is developing tools that benefit users—even if it could lead to less income from Google One subscriptions. Would you find this function useful or annoying? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
