Ewert was scheduled to take on Jackson McVey on the undercard of UFC 317. Unfortunately, he came in a staggering 10 pounds over the 170-pound weight limit. That drastic miss resulted in the UFC cutting ties with him instantly.

UFC CEO Dana White and his executive team aren’t about to tolerate such issues from a fighter making their debut—unless they’ve already established a strong name, reputation, and loyal fan following that travels.

That wasn’t the situation for Ewert. He has had an impressive run in his career so far, maintaining a perfect 7-0 record, most recently securing back-to-back wins with Fury FC. Nevertheless, the UFC likely wasn’t pleased that Ewert’s weight issue caused yet another fight to be removed from the International Fight Week lineup.

The consequences are two-fold here. Not only did Ewert forfeit what could have been a life-changing opportunity, but he also interrupted McVey’s rising momentum. McVey is another undefeated prospect who has consistently ended fights by knockout. Originally set to face Sedriques Dumas, McVey lost that opponent when Dumas couldn't get an ankle monitor removed in time for fight week activities.

Ewert stepped in as the replacement. He was even pulled from a planned bout on the upcoming season of Dana White’s Contender Series to take this matchup with McVey.

Fans might also lose out in this scenario. McVey possesses serious star potential. The 26-year-old, standing at 6-foot-4, has finished every professional fight by knockout. UFC fans will now have to wait longer to see him inside the Octagon.

There's still a chance for Ewert to appear on DWCS, but missing weight so dramatically doesn’t reflect well on his first appearance under the UFC banner. According to Ewert’s camp, they made a serious effort to make weight but fell short of the mark.
