There’s no rest for the wicked goblins at Paizo. Fresh books have been released, offering expanded options for players and Game Masters. Here are some highlights from these recent releases, with thanks to the company for providing review copies for this article.
Pathfinder Second Edition Remastered Lost Omens: Rival Academies
Fantasy stories like Harry Potter have made wizarding schools a popular campaign setting. It makes sense to follow first-level spellcasters as freshmen through their graduation and beyond. Schools offer plenty of potential allies and rivals that can create drama between dungeon runs.
Lost Omens: Rival Academies gives players six schools to choose from, each with unique personalities and characteristics. They feature different focuses and philosophies that delve into the intrigues of wizards for any game. There's even a runelord archetype for players who want to explore the darker side of magic users that have existed since the beginning of the game.
I especially enjoyed the Convocation section, which brings the schools together for a sort of convention and competition. There’s a lot of politics and intrigue to explore here. It shows that Pathfinder isn’t just about dungeon crawls all the time.
Pathfinder Second Edition Remastered NPC Core
One of the joys of classic fantasy games is flipping through the monster book for inspiration. Sometimes it’s to intensify an encounter, other times a cool monster with a clever ability can spark a new story. But what about challenges of a less monstrous kind?
The NPC Core book focuses on humanoid adversaries ranging from goblin raiders to infernal bureaucrats. Each entry comes with a full write-up plus lore, world-building information, and special rules to challenge players in ways beyond combat. These NPCs are ideal for city and town encounters.
I’m glad Paizo chose to make this its own book. Mundane adversaries often get short shrift because monsters naturally draw more attention. Here, normal people players meet get more detail, helping them connect better with players and making story hooks more engaging.
Pathfinder Second Edition Remastered Treasure Vault
As Pathfinder Second Edition books go out of print, Paizo is taking the chance to bring them fully in line with their remaster project. Guns & Gears was the first such update, refining some of the steampunk elements of the game. The inventor and gunslinger classes were adjusted to ensure they work well with the rest of the system.
The latest book to receive this treatment is Treasure Vault. This book contains a dragon’s hoard worth of magical items, from the smallest consumables to legendary relics. Players love getting new toys to play with—and these are the newest ones available.
It also includes crafting rules that go deeper than usual, allowing players to build their own epic swords instead of buying one from the local blacksmith. I really appreciated the narrative questing rules for crafts and the advice on how to turn a magic item into something earned by the players. There are excellent examples tied to iconic monsters to slay.
Starfinder Galaxy Guide
Starfinder Second Edition officially launches next month. However, thanks to the playtest, most fans already know what to expect from the core books. The last title on our list bridges the gap between the two versions of the game.
The first official Starfinder Second Edition hardcover is Galaxy Guide. For veteran fans, it recaps major events in the setting with solid summaries of story points like the Drift Crisis and the Newborn. That also makes it a perfect starting point for newcomers.
The book features six ancestries, which are my favorite part of Starfinder. While I'm happy the new edition can easily import ones from Pathfinder, the ones here embrace a fun sci-fi vibe straight out of Star Wars or Guardians of the Galaxy. I’m definitely going to make a character using the giant floating brain aliens known as speculatives from this book.
