If you’ve just landed on the island and don’t know where to start, aim for crafting these key items. With some scavenging and luck — and avoiding Puppets and other players — you should be able to pull it off.

Stone (Or Metal) Spear

DEENA teaches you how to make a wooden spear, which is the easiest weapon to craft. It’s better than nothing, but with a bit more effort, you can upgrade to a much stronger weapon.

By collecting extra rope (made from Small Sticks or Rag Strips), you can attach a proper spearhead, making your weapon far more deadly. Rocks work well for a stone version, but if you’re near a town, you can scavenge cars for Metal Scrap and create a metal-tipped spear instead.

Stone Axe

If you plan to build any kind of shelter or structure, you’ll need an axe. To craft one, first make an axe head using stones, then attach it to sticks and rope to complete the tool.

Hammer

Once you can produce planks, your next step should be crafting a hammer, since most building recipes require it. A basic hammer is easy to make using sticks, rope, and a large stone. You might have to search a bit before finding a stone of the right size — look for Stones rather than Small Stones, as they only spawn around 50% of the time.

Hammers are useful not only for construction (and self-defense in emergencies), but also for breaking rocks into Stone Tips. This allows you to craft Stone Arrows instead of basic wooden ones, increasing your chance of taking down enemies without resorting to melee combat.

Storage Chest

Inventory management in Scum is brutal; you can only carry what fits in your pockets. Unless you find a backpack or good clothing early on, you’ll have to be selective about what you bring. A storage chest gives you a safe place to store valuable items.

Tool Box

After securing storage space, the next step is building a tool box. This requires more bolts and nails, but with your hammer, some planks, and scrap materials, assembling one shouldn’t be too hard.

The tool box is required for mid-tier builds like the well (see below), and also helps in creating more advanced storage units such as log sheds.

Sewing Kit

Crafting a sewing kit can depend on luck because you need to find thread, which you can’t make yourself. However, being able to repair clothes, especially backpacks, can be extremely useful.

Once you have thread, you'll also need a needle. Needles are rarely found in haystacks (yes, really), but the easiest way to get one is by killing a Puppet, cutting up its body, and carving bones into needles using a knife.

Fishing Gear

If you land near the coast or a river, learning to fish can greatly reduce your risk of starvation. Unfortunately, gathering all the parts needed for a functional fishing rod takes serious effort.

Just having a rod and line isn't enough — you also need a hook, floater, reel, and bait. Bait can be found by checking rotten logs for bugs, but the other components require rare materials. The floater and reel both need corks, needles, and nails, while the hook must be made from a soda can.

These items are quite rare, so if you come across any, guard them carefully. Once you're able to fish, set up a campfire and start cooking your catch.

Well

A poor starting location may leave you far from fresh water, which quickly becomes a major issue. Eating fruits and vegetables can delay dehydration, but securing a reliable water source is critical.

Choose the spot for your well carefully, as it requires full-sized logs. You can only carry one at a time, and movement is limited while carrying them. Once built, you can drink directly from the well, or use it to refill water bottles.
