How to Share Location with Family on iPhone & iPad with Family Sharing
Jun 26, 2025 am 09:07 AMWant to let your family know where you are without having to call them? Tired of telling others how long it’ll take for you to arrive home? If so, then you’ll be happy to learn more about Location Sharing on iPhone and iPad. This feature allows you to share your real-time location with others as you move around.
If you're using Family Sharing and have your family members added to your group, sharing your location becomes much simpler. Parents can use this function to monitor their children’s location when needed, and it's also useful for couples or other relatives who want to stay connected.
Let’s walk through how to set up Family Sharing on your iPhone so that you and your family can always see each other’s location.
How to Share Your Location with Family on iPhone & iPad Using Family Sharing
Before proceeding, make sure you've already added everyone to your family group. You can read more about adding and removing members from Family Sharing here. Once that’s done, follow the steps below.
- Open “Settings” from your iPhone or iPad home screen.
- Tap your Apple ID name at the top of the Settings menu.
- In your Apple ID settings, scroll down and tap “Family Sharing,” which is just above your list of devices.
- Here you’ll see all the people in your family group. If none appear, go back and add them first. Then, tap on “Location Sharing” as shown.
- This will open the Find My app settings. First, enable the “Share My Location” toggle. Then, select any family member to proceed.
- Now, tap “Share My Location” to activate the feature.
- If there’s someone in your group you don’t want to share with, simply choose that person and tap “Stop Sharing My Location.”
That’s it. Now you know how simple it is to share your location with family members using your iPhone or iPad.
From now on, if you’re caught in traffic and running late, your loved ones can check your current position via the Find My app.
Also keep in mind that you don’t have to share your location with everyone in your group — you can manage this individually.
If you find this feature especially helpful, you might also want to try sharing your location with close friends. The Find My app even lets you receive notifications when a contact arrives at or leaves a specific place. When this is turned on, alerts will show up directly on your lock screen.
Do you frequently use iMessage to chat with friends or coworkers? If yes, you can easily send your current location by typing a single phrase. It’s definitely the fastest way to share where you are right now.
Thanks to Location Sharing, manually giving out your whereabouts over the phone is no longer necessary. No more calls saying “I’m almost there,” because they can see it themselves.
What do you think of this convenient location-sharing function? How often do you use it? Feel free to leave your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.
