Gemini Can Finally Do One of Google Assistant's Oldest Tricks
Jun 23, 2025 am 12:59 AMSummary
- Gemini will replace Google Assistant on Android phones in 2025.
- Song identification was missing from Gemini, leading to user frustration.
- Recent updates now allow Gemini to automatically launch the Google app's Song Search for song recognition.
One of the reasons I haven’t been overly enthusiastic about Gemini is that it lacks many features found in the older Google Assistant. For a long time, Assistant could identify songs when asked, which was incredibly useful. However, with Gemini taking over, this smooth experience disappeared, creating a noticeable gap.
For quite some time, asking Gemini "what song is this?" resulted in an unhelpful suggestion to use a music recognition app instead. It marked a significant regression compared to the seamless Assistant experience we had grown accustomed to, pushing users to other platforms for something that was previously effortless. Fortunately, as Gemini prepares to fully replace Assistant later this year, this issue is finally being addressed.

Google Assistant’s time is limited. By late 2025, Google intends to completely replace Assistant with Gemini on Android devices. This follows a year of feature enhancements designed to bring Gemini closer to the capabilities of the much older Google Assistant.
3 Recently, an update to Gemini on Android restored this essential functionality. Now, when you ask Gemini to identify a song, it automatically opens the Song Search feature within the Google app. You'll see the familiar pulsing sphere appear on your screen while it analyzes the music. Although the results still open inside the Google app itself, unlike Assistant, it's a major improvement over Gemini simply suggesting you use another app.Back in March, when Google announced its plan to phase out Google Assistant in favor of Gemini, it acknowledged there was more work to be done. The company stated it was focusing on enhancing the “quality of the day-to-day Gemini experience” for those who rely heavily on Google Assistant. Clearly, song identification was one of those key features, and it’s reassuring to see it finally implemented.
I’m still not entirely convinced that Gemini surpasses Assistant for tasks like this that didn’t previously require AI, but it's definitely one of those features you don’t realize you miss until it's gone. Being able to issue a simple voice command and have my phone start listening for music is a convenience I appreciate. This update is currently active on Android. On iPhone, however, saying "what song is this" still doesn't activate Song Search.
