There was a time when Google knew they were moving toward gesture navigation, but felt that users weren't quite ready for the full transition. As a result, Android 9 featured a two-button nav bar that allowed both tapping and swiping. Android 10 later introduced full gesture navigation, which is the version the Pixel 4 launched with—meaning it never officially had that fun, quirky two-button system. However, you can essentially bring it back.
By using a simple Magisk module, you can restore the older pill-and-back-button navigation style to Android 10 on the Pixel 4. The pill acts as both a traditional home button that you can tap and also serves as a drag handle for the upward multitasking swipe gesture. The back button functions just like it used to, and having it there means you can once again use the edge-swipe gesture to open side navigation drawers in apps.
Prerequisites
- A rooted Pixel 4 or 4 XL running Magisk
Download PieNav
The Magisk module that enables this functionality was created by XDA's Mishaal Rahman. You can find the download link for the PieNav ZIP file at the bottom of the first post in the thread linked below. If you don’t already have one, you can create an XDA account here.
- Go to the PieNav Download Thread on XDA
Install the Module
Open your Magisk Manager app, go into "Modules," and select "Install from storage." Locate the file "Pixel42ButtonNavv1.0.zip" inside your Download folder, then tap "Install" and choose "Reboot" after installation completes.
Switch to 2-Button Navigation
After your device reboots, head to Settings –> System –> Gestures –> System navigation. There should now be a new option nestled between "Gesture navigation" and "3-button navigation." Tap on "2-button navigation" to activate it.
