Summary
- Google Messages previously included a convenient feature for unsubscribing from spam texts, but has now taken it away in certain regions.
- The unsubscribe option will no longer appear within texts for users located in the US and Spain.
- Despite this update, Google Messages continues to provide a variety of useful features for users.
Earlier this year, Google introduced an excellent feature for Google Messages that simplified blocking and deleting spam messages. Whenever you received an unwanted message, there was an unsubscribe button you could tap to automatically try to opt out. Seems pretty good, doesn’t it? However, unexpectedly, Google has just eliminated it.
How many people enjoy receiving junk and spam texts? I'll wait for your response. These days, we all encounter those unsolicited text messages from businesses, political campaigns, charities, or scams. Those automated messages are sent out by the millions every day, and we're all tired of them.

So close to competing with iMessage.
12 Google Messages has seen significant improvements over the past year. In late April, Google rolled out a handy "unsubscribe" button that made eliminating junk messages easier than ever before. While initially only accessible to beta testers, many users, including myself, used it regularly. Unfortunately, as noted by Android Authority, the feature is no longer available and has vanished from the app. Here's how it worked: whenever you received one of those unwanted messages and Google detected it might be spam, a prominent unsubscribe button would appear at the top of the message. Tapping on that link provided additional details, sent a "STOP" message to the sender, and then deleted the message.
Google Messages unsubscribe feature We aren't exactly sure what prompted the change, but it’s possible businesses weren't thrilled with it. Yesterday, Google confirmed it would be rolling back the feature and has now removed the unsubscribe button for users in both the United States and Spain. If there’s any small consolation, you may still see it occasionally, though these instances will likely be rare.
For example, business messages utilizing RCS will no longer display the unsubscribe button domestically. It also won’t show up at the bottom of standard SMS messages from businesses using a short code. However, the option will remain in the main menu. Meanwhile, in Spain, the unsubscribe button has been disabled both inside conversations and in the context menu.
According to Google, this decision was made to enhance the UI, and the company stated, "As we continue to optimize the user experience, we've updated the availability of the Unsubscribe feature."
Despite these changes, Google Messages remains a solid choice filled with numerous features. In recent months, Google has introduced an upgraded media sharing interface, integrated a snooze function for notifications, and added several customization options for RCS group chats. Additionally, real-time location sharing is reportedly coming in a future update. As a reminder, you can access new features early by joining the Google Messages beta program on the Play Store.
