How to complete A Trip Through History in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

The ruin within the village is inaccessible until later in the game, specifically during the Sage of Light storyline. However, A Trip Through History is a quest you can undertake independently by simply visiting the open ruins.

To begin or finish the quest, speak with Bugut, who wanders around the center of Kakariko Village, typically between the Ring Garland stall and the general store. He’s eager to learn what the inscriptions say on the stone slabs found inside the ruined structures, but he refuses to climb due to his fear of heights—this is where you come in.

Although the quest description suggests you might need a Zonai Expedition team member to interpret the text, the translations are already completed. All you must do is locate the slab in three of the ruins and read the translation provided on a nearby workbench. The fourth ruin is somewhat different, as you cannot physically enter it to view the translation.

You’re free to visit the ring ruins in any sequence in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but the easiest to start with is the southwestern ruin, as it can be reached quickly from Makasura Shrine. Fast travel there, ascend the hill, and glide over to the ruins. You'll find two elderly villagers debating attack and defense. If you've spoken with the general store owner, you can listen in on their argument as part of her quest, though it isn’t mandatory.

This ruin is occupied by a group of blue Bokoblins camped in the middle. Defeat them however you prefer, then proceed to the back of the ruins. Turn right after the campfire, and the slab along with its translation will be directly ahead.

Return to the shrine and head east this time. Glide above the village and follow the wooden path into the next set of ruins.

From this ruin, face north and glide toward the cliff near the forest, then follow the edge of the woods until you spot a tall scaffold ahead. Glide over to it, climb upward, and continue along the walkway to reach the third ruin.

Exit and turn back toward the village. You’ll see Makasura Shrine ahead, and slightly closer, the restricted ruins. Turn right and descend the hill, bypassing the fence surrounding the forbidden ruins until you reach the cliff’s edge overlooking the massive Ring beyond the waterfall.

This time, the slab isn't inside the ruin, so climbing isn’t necessary. Instead, glide toward the scaffolding and climb up. Eventually, it leads to a wide platform where someone is sleeping atop the stone slab. There's no way to wake them, nor is it needed. As always, the translation is available on a table beside you.

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Ring Ruins rewards

After exploring the four accessible Ring Ruins in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, float back down to Kakariko Village and talk to Bugut once more.

He presents you with three Thunderwing Butterflies, which can be combined with monster parts to craft an elixir that boosts your resistance to electric attacks. The only other reward is the translated lore from the stone slabs, offering insight into events from the past in Tears of the Kingdom.
