How to reach Alfornada in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Alfornada is one of the hardest Gyms to access, located in the southwest corner of the map above an underground cave entrance.
To climb up through this cave, you need to have unlocked a specific ability during the Path of Legends story. We used high jump to get through, though climbing may also work.
Normally, we’d suggest marking the Gym or Pokémon Center on the map if you're having trouble finding your way, but since the town is above the cave, that won’t help here. Keep heading upward through the cave, following any trainers you encounter, and eventually you’ll find the light leading to Alfornada at the top.
Once you arrive in Alfornada, the Psychic Gym is located on the eastern side of the town.

The Gym Test in Alfornada involves completing Emotional Spectrum Practice with your Academy teacher Dendra.
To pass this part of the test, you must press the correct button corresponding to the emotion Dendra calls out. Each emotion has a color associated with it: red means angry, yellow means joyful, etc.
Here’s what each emotion corresponds to:
- Angry (Red) - X
- Joyful (Yellow) - A
- Surprised (Blue) - B
- Excited (Green) - Y
After passing the first ESP test, you will enter a battle against Trainer Emily.
Emily's team and how to defeat it:
Pokémon | Level | Type | Weaknesses |
---|---|---|---|
Gothorita | 43 | Psychic | Bug, Dark and Ghost |
Kirlia | 43 | Psychic / Fairy | Ghost, Poison and Steel |
Defeating Emily gives you 6,020 prize money, and then you’ll take on another ESP test. Once you pass that, you'll face off against Trainer Rafael.
Rafael's team and how to defeat him:
Pokémon | Level | Type | Weaknesses |
---|---|---|---|
Grumpig | 43 | Psychic | Bug, Dark and Ghost |
Medicham | 43 | Fighting / Psychic | Fairy, Flying and Ghost |
Indeedee | 43 | Psychic / Normal | Bug and Dark |
After defeating Rafael, you’ll receive 6,020 prize money, and the Emotional Spectrum Practice will be completed. You’ve now passed the Psychic Gym Test.
Return to the Gym and prepare yourself for the battle ahead — make sure your team is fully healed before challenging Tulip.
How to beat Psychic Gym Leader Tulip in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Tulip, the Gym Leader of Alfornada, specializes in Psychic-type Pokémon, and her team reflects that focus.
Psychic-types are vulnerable to Bug, Dark, and Ghost-type moves.
If you selected Sprigatito as your starter, consider using it here, as it has both Grass and Dark typing. Alternatively, bring strong Bug, Dark, or Ghost-type Pokémon into battle.
Keep in mind that, like other Gym Leaders, Tulip will Terastallize her final Pokémon — even if it starts as a different type, it will become a Psychic-type during the battle.
Tulip’s full team includes:
Pokémon | Level | Type | Weaknesses |
---|---|---|---|
Farigiraf | 44 | Normal / Psychic | Bug and Dark |
Espathra | 44 | Psychic | Bug, Dark and Ghost |
Gardevoir | 44 | Psychic / Fairy | Ghost, Poison and Steel |
Florges | 45 | FairyTerra Type: Psychic | Poison and SteelTerra Type: Bug and Dark |
Upon defeating Tulip, you will receive 8,100 prize money, TM120 Psychic, and a Gym Badge — the level cap increase for freely using Pokémon depends on your current progress in the Victory Road story.
Depending on where you are in the Victory Road storyline, you may also face Nemona after beating Tulip.
If you'd like a break from Gym challenges, you can also continue exploring the Path of Legends and Starfall Street stories.
