The life sim genre has consistently attracted a broad audience, and inZOI – which entered early access in March – promised players the freedom to create nearly any character they could imagine. This included a commitment from the developers that equal marriage would be supported at launch, with love being portrayed as love regardless of gender.

Yet, shortly after release, players discovered that while adult Zois could be directed to pursue romantic connections with anyone in an appropriate age range, same-gender interest among AI-controlled characters appeared to be nonexistent. Unless players manually set up relationships between custom-created Zois, same-gender romance wouldn’t occur organically beyond traditional norms.

This wasn't the only quirk related to relationships at launch. Teen Zois showed no romantic interest in each other, and unmarried couples couldn't conceive children regardless of their interactions (which, of course, isn't reflective of real-world scenarios). Still, these issues may not have been intentional oversights, especially considering the Version 0.2.0 update now allows for customising Zois' gender identity (an in-game term that includes romantic orientation) to create explicitly LGBTQ characters – just in time for Pride Month!

The new gender and attraction customisation features are accessible in the Profile tab of Create-a-Zoi.

When selecting your Zoi's gender, you’ll now find a third option alongside the standard male and female icons. This enables more nuanced edits to your Zoi’s gender identity.

Editing your Zoi's gender opens up three independent settings:

• Gender Identity: Male, Female, Nonbinary
  You can only choose one; this won't alter the Zoi’s physical appearance or primary gender selection in CAZ.

• Romantic Relationships: Interested in Romantic Relationships
  Unchecking this will prevent the Zoi from forming any romantic attachments (and disables the final option).

• Attracted To: Male, Female, Nonbinary
  This is fully customisable, allowing you to select none, some, or all options without affecting the others.

By default, a Zoi’s gender identity aligns with their physical presentation, and they're only romantically interested in the opposite sex. Therefore, it's crucial to adjust these settings during creation if you want non-allocishet identities.

Starting a new game with at least one edited Zoi will result in randomly generated NPC Zois who also exhibit diverse gender identities and attractions across all genders.

However, according to the patch notes, unless you introduce a gender-diverse Zoi into the world, all automatically generated NPCs will follow the pre-update defaults.

Support for LGBTQ identities isn't the only relationship-related change in Version 0.2.0. Now, Zoi pairs with compatible biology can get pregnant regardless of marital status (so proceed with caution), and teens are no longer devoid of romantic feelings and can now form relationships with each other. These updates bring a greater sense of realism to the game.

Additionally, the cheat console has been significantly enhanced, introducing commands for editing pregnancies and returning characters to CAZ for further adjustments (useful if you'd like to tweak the gender settings on previously made Zois).
