Bitcoin Core Developers Plan Op_return Data Carrier to Increase To Finalize Victory Against Conservatives
Jun 12, 2025 pm 06:57 PMThinking victory is a foregone conclusion, a group of influential Bitcoin developers plan to make a major update to the core software in October, which will mark their final victory in the controversy.
A group of influential Bitcoin (BTC) developers have arranged for major changes to core software this October, a move that will confirm their dominance in the fight against conservative opponents.
If the most popular Bitcoin full node software version 0.30 is launched as scheduled, then Bitcoin Core's default MEMPOOL will no longer restrict the use of OP_Return opcodes to carry large amounts of non-transactional data.
This year, developers have been caught up in debate over their support for allowing data that is not related to Bitcoin transfers on-chain. Previously, the default settings strictly restrict the size of this type of data.
For a long time, Bitcoin Core's default MEMPOOL has limited the output data volume to a maximum of 84 bytes through the OP_Return instruction. But this year, progressive members, including Antoine Puinsot and Peter Todd, advocated a substantial easing of the restrictions.
This practice was criticized by conservatives such as Luke Dashjr and BitcoinMechanic as irresponsible, deviating from Bitcoin’s original intentions and potentially harming corporate interests, triggering a boycott campaign.
The conservative camp insists that Bitcoin nodes should not participate in storing data content that is not related to on-chain transfers. They stressed that Bitcoin ledgers should focus on validating transactions rather than acting as cloud storage or general-purpose data storage platform.
"Op_Return output over 83 bytes will significantly aggravate the UTXO bloat problem and cause the on-chain junk data to flood. These effects will be as difficult as tattoos."
Large capacity OP_Return data will be enabled in October
In an unexpected statement, despite being misread as conservatives celebrating their victory in advance, progressive developer Gloria Zhao officially announced this morning that the Bitcoin Core 0.30 version will be released in October. (The current latest version is 0.29.0.)
As a compromise, the progressives decided to increase the default limit from 80 bytes to nearly 4MB, while allowing node operators to adjust the parameter by manually configuring the options -dataCarrier and -dataCarriers.
Of course, they are aware that most node users will follow the default settings without actively switching to conservatively preferred configurations.
Psott and Todd's initial proposals did not even provide the functionality to modify the limit. This open configuration option is a limited concession made by the progressives. The real change is still a significant increase in the default value.
Progressives also acknowledged that the change was not unanimously recognized by the community.
Bitcoin Magazine technology editor Ben Rex Beiderman recently described conservatives as "anxious, ignorant people, and in some cases manipulative and aggressive social media behavior."
Meanwhile, Bitcoin Machinery is fiercely criticizing these gradual modifications for being completely "violating the principle of consistency."

The coordinated rise of Bitcoin, Chainlink and RWA marks the shift toward institutional narrative dominance in the crypto market. Bitcoin, as a macro hedging asset allocated by institutions, provides a stable foundation for the market; Chainlink has become a key bridge connecting the reality and the digital world through oracle and cross-chain technology; RWA provides a compliance path for traditional capital entry. The three jointly built a complete logical closed loop of institutional entry: 1) allocate BTC to stabilize the balance sheet; 2) expand on-chain asset management through RWA; 3) rely on Chainlink to build underlying infrastructure, indicating that the market has entered a new stage driven by real demand.
