In Oblivion's fourth quest, Breaking the Siege of Kvatch, you'll be tasked with fighting through an Oblivion Gate and clearing the way to the Chapel of Akatosh in Kvatch.

This follows on from Find the Heir, which sets you on the path to defend Kvatch and find Martin.

For this specific Oblivion Remastered quest, you'll need to close an Oblivion Gate and defeat various enemies that have been released onto the city itself before securing it once more.

Entering the Oblivion Gate

When you first enter the Oblivion Gate, you'll see the massive towers ahead that are your main destination for progressing this quest.

You'll be attacked by a couple of enemies before encountering a friendly face approaching you for conversation.

This Imperial Guard, Ilend Vonius, is on his way back out into Cyrodiil, but you can ask them to stay and fight with you, giving you an additional companion to battle the demonic hordes you'll encounter. Note that they don't seem to have much health, so you'll need to protect them well!

Oblivion Breaking the Siege of Kvatch walkthrough

The path in this initial area is fairly straightforward to follow - essentially, you'll want to keep going around the left side as it leads to the tower you're heading toward.

You'll have a few enemies to fight along the way, including Stunted Scamps and Dremora Scouts, but it's a fairly linear path there.

However, take your time as there will be several traps you need to deal with, including boulders dropping from above, as well as Spiddal Stick and Harrada Root plants that will attack in different ways if you get close. There are also proximity-based Daedric landmines that launch up into the air and explode as you approach.

When you're ready, head towards the front of the tall tower you are near, and enter - what is ostensibly - the front door. This will take you into to pleasantly-named, very welcoming area known as The Blood Feast.

Upon entering, you'll be greeted by a raging cyclone of fire, spiralling upwards in the middle of the room. Striking imagery, but only furthering the dangerous vibes this place evokes.

In this room, you'll encounter a couple more Stunted Scamps - defeat them, loot them if they have any useful items, and then head around the side of the room to find a door that leads you to the Rending Halls.

The Citadel Hall Door will lead you down a slope back into the lower levels of the previous room you were in, but the door adjacent to that will lead you back out to The Blood Feast, which is where you'll need to return to next - now on a higher floor.

Once you're through here, you'll have to take a bit of a detour to make further progress, as detailed below.

Corridors of Dark Salvation and finding the Sigil Keep Key

After entering this new area, it'll be a straight linear path up to where you need to go. Follow the path, and enter the next room where you'll find a couple of Stunted Scamps.

After they're down, you'll now need to find a key to access the Citadel Hall Door which is currently locked.

Oblivion Breaking the Siege of Kvatch walkthrough

It's at this point where you'll need to take a bit of a diversion, via a door on the left side of the room (from where you entered) which leads you back outside to the 'Plane of Oblivion'.

Upon exiting, you'll notice you're on a connecting path between towers, super high up from where you first entered the Oblivion Gate. Simply follow the path along and enter the 'Reapers Sprawl' tower through the door at the other end.

Oblivion Breaking the Siege of Kvatch walkthrough

Head up the slope to your right to find Menien Goneld trapped in a cage, guarded by a Dremora Sigil Keeper who will engage in conversation with you. After their threats, you'll need to defeat them, and after the battle, you can loot the Sigil Keep Key which you can use on that locked door from earlier.

Feel free to speak to Menien and explore the tower a little further, but once you're ready, return the way you came - across the bridge and into the previous room, and then use the key to open the locked door.

Once at the top end of the slope, head over to the nearby door opposite the stained glass window, and head through back into the Blood Feast.

The Sigil Stone and closing the Oblivion Gate

At this point, you're coming to the end of this area after a few more battles and places to visit.

Once back in The Blood Feast area, follow the left or right path to encounter a Dremora Churl enemy who can summon Scamps. Defeat whatever stands in your way, and be sure to loot them for a hefty number of additional items including potions and a few Spells too.

Standing on this will give you the prompt 'Ruined Portal to The Blood Feast' which you can interact with to be able to access the next area.

These next couple of areas is where you'll finally be able to close shut the Oblivion Gate. Eliminate all the enemies standing in your way, loot everything you'd like to collect, and follow the path until you reach the door leading to Sigillum Sanguis, which you'll want to enter - you'll open it with the key you found earlier.

Once you're ready, interact with the Sigil Stone at the top which you'll collect for yourself as the fires erupt and destroy the gate from within, returning you outside of Kvatch where you can return to Savlian Matius.

After exiting the Oblivion Gate, speak to Matius once more nearby the fortifications to alert him the Gate is now shut. Following this, he'll ask to let him know when you're ready to join them in entering Kvatch.

You can join them straight away or give it some time, but whenever you're up for it, select 'I'm ready. Let's go.' and this will lead you into the final steps of this quest.

Image credit: Eurogamer/Bethesda Game StudiosFollow Matius into Kvatch via the gate and defeat all the enemies in the area - there are only a few, so this part doesn't take too long. A couple of quest popups will alert you here, both when you enter, and after all enemies are down.

Oblivion Breaking the Siege of Kvatch walkthrough

Once that's all done, speak to Matius and he'll direct you into the Chapel where you'll conclude the quest.

Debrief with Savlian Matius

Upon entering the Chapel of Akatosh, Matius will speak to another Imperial Guard. Once this conversation is over, you can debrief the situation fully with him.

Oblivion Breaking the Siege of Kvatch walkthrough

At this point, you'll have a quest titled The Battle for Castle Kvatch added to your log, opening up another set of objectives you can carry out alongside Matius. This is technically an optional quest, but it might be worth doing whilst you're here.

Oblivion Breaking the Siege of Kvatch walkthrough

Ultimately though, it's up to you - you can continue helping at Kvatch by clearing out the remaining enemies both in and outside of Kvatch Castle, or you can find Martin in the same chapel you're in to fully complete the quest, Find the Heir which will conclude shortly after, simply by speaking to Martin and travelling with him to Weynon Priory.

Whatever your choice, be sure to have a read of our individual guides with all the details on both.
