The Witcher 4’s State of Unreal 2025 tech demo might still undergo further enhancements prior to its official launch. Continue reading to find out more about what CD Projekt Red aims to achieve in terms of frame rates and what was unveiled during the tech demo.
The Witcher 4 State of Unreal 2025 Tech Demo
60fps on Base PS5
The Witcher 4’s tech demo at the State of Unreal 2025 boasted stunning visuals, operating at 60fps using the standard PS5. Nevertheless, this demonstration doesn’t reflect the final version of the game, and modifications could occur as development progresses.
During an interview with Eurogamer on June 3, a spokesperson from CD Projekt Red (CDPR) mentioned that achieving 60fps on PS5 is their objective; however, no definitive decisions have been made yet. They noted, "It’s still premature to confirm precise specifications for each platform, but we’re collaborating closely with Epic to develop an open-world experience that’s visually appealing and smooth to play."
The demo certainly captivated many fans, though it might inadvertently raise unattainable expectations for how The Witcher 4 will appear and operate upon release. CDPR faced a similar scenario leading up to the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, where numerous people were impressed by the studio’s promotional efforts, but the game encountered a multitude of bugs, glitches, and performance problems at launch.
The spokesperson emphasized that this tech demo doesn’t signify the ultimate form of The Witcher 4, but instead displays the tools the studio and Epic Games have been refining. "This implies that particular visual elements like character models and environments might differ in The Witcher 4," they commented.
Early Development Unreal Engine 5 Tech Demo
The 14-minute live demo highlighted Unreal Engine 5.6’s features, encompassing lifelike environments, high-definition visuals, advanced ray tracing, and more. The developers aimed to stress that the presentation serves as a technical showcase and won’t mirror the final product’s gameplay.
The video starts with a brief clip of a carriage being attacked by a monster. It then transitions smoothly into live gameplay where players control Ciri as she searches through the debris and explores the vicinity.
Viewers were then introduced to Ciri’s horse companion, Kelpie, and the developers underscored the "root motion movement" they incorporated to enhance the realism of horseback travel. They even delved into making Kelpie’s muscle movements precise and accurate using the engine’s ML Deformer.
Additional significant updates from Unreal Engine showcased included Nanite Foliage, which renders detailed and dense vegetation without compromising performance, Fast Geo Streaming that enables swift and seamless loading of expansive environments, MetaHuman AI crowds and Mass Framework, which manages large, dynamic crowds with believable AI behaviors and interactions.
With the presentation, CDPR unveiled the new region of Kovir, an unexplored location within The Witcher games. Ciri also visited the small town of Valdrest, functioning as a harbor nestled amidst snow-capped mountains.
Regrettably, CDPR hasn’t disclosed any combat gameplay in the demo, focusing more on demonstrating UE5’s graphical prowess and advancements. Nonetheless, fans are thrilled to witness the next level of The Witcher brought to life using Epic Games’ latest engine.
The Witcher 4 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. No specific release date has been announced. To keep abreast of the latest updates regarding the game, refer to our article below!
