Microsoft has introduced Edit, a new command-line text editor that weighs in at less than 250kB and is entirely coded in Rust. The source code is openly accessible on GitHub under the MIT License, suggesting potential future adaptations for other operating systems, even though Microsoft is currently focusing on Windows.
But Why?
Given the plethora of command-line text editors available, one might wonder why Microsoft felt the need to develop another. According to a blog post, the motivation stems from a common issue: the "How do I exit vim?" meme. The difficulty in exiting vim has been a notorious hurdle for many users. Microsoft aimed to create a default editor that avoids such complexities, but found that existing options either lacked Windows support or were too large to include in every OS version. Hence, Edit was created.
Edit draws inspiration from the MS-DOS Editor, which debuted as the default text editor in MS-DOS in 1991 and evolved into a standalone application in Windows 95 as an alternative to Notepad. The Editor remained a feature in all 32-bit Windows releases up to Windows 10. However, it was omitted from 64-bit versions of Windows, which cannot run 16-bit applications like Editor. With Windows 11 being exclusively 64-bit, the Editor was completely phased out.
For users accustomed to using Nano for quick terminal edits, Edit appears to be a promising alternative. There's hope that a macOS version might be developed in the future.
Get Edit
Currently, Edit is not accessible through winget or other package managers, but it can be downloaded from the GitHub releases page. To use it, you must either run it from within the extracted folder or place the edit binary in a directory listed in your system PATH.
Microsoft plans to introduce Edit to Windows Insider builds in the upcoming months, with a broader rollout to all Windows 11 machines to follow.
