How to Connect Xbox Controller to Windows 11 in Reliable Ways?
This MiniTool Software guide offers three ways to connect your Xbox controller to Windows 11, plus troubleshooting tips for connection issues. Many gamers have upgraded to Windows 11 for its enhanced Xbox features, making controller connectivity crucial.
Method 1: Bluetooth Connection
This method requires a Bluetooth-enabled Xbox controller (check the image below to identify compatibility).
- Power on your controller using the Xbox button.
- Hold the Pair button for three seconds until the Xbox button rapidly flashes.
- On your PC, navigate to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Enable Bluetooth.

- Choose Xbox Wireless Controller or Xbox Elite Wireless Controller and click Done.
Note: Bluetooth connections limit controller attachments (headsets, chat pads, etc.) and ideally support only one controller at a time.

Connect your controller using a micro-USB cable (USB-C for Xbox Series X|S, Elite Series 2, or Adaptive Controller). This method allows for multiple controller connections (up to 8, or 4 with chat headsets; 2 with stereo headsets).
Method 3: Xbox Wireless Adapter Connection
While some Windows PCs have built-in Xbox Wireless, an adapter may be necessary.
- Power on your computer and controller.
- Hold the Pair button on your controller while the Xbox button flashes rapidly.
- In Windows 11 Settings > Bluetooth & devices, select Add device > Everything else.
- Choose your controller. A solid Xbox button light indicates a successful connection.
Similar to USB, multiple controllers can be connected using this method (with the same limitations as USB regarding headsets). Note that controllers paired via Xbox Wireless need to be re-synced with the console after PC use.
Troubleshooting Controller Connection Problems:
If your controller isn't recognized, try these steps:
- Reconnect the controller.
- Restart your controller and/or PC.
- Try a different USB cable.
- Update your controller and USB drivers.
- Reinstall the drivers.
- Temporarily disable antivirus and firewall software.
- Update Windows 11.
