What Is Groove Music and How to Use It - Make Tech Easier
May 27, 2025 am 01:40 AMA little-known surprise hidden treasure in Windows 10 is Groove Music. While it used to be a collection of music players and digital music subscription services/stores, now it's just a music player. If you've never tried this app, you're probably not the only one. However, once you spend a few minutes using it, you will find it perfect for managing music stored on your computer and in the cloud.
What is Groove Music?
I know everyone likes iPods, but I personally prefer Zune. It has more storage space and is cheaper, but unfortunately Microsoft has stopped supporting it. As it disappeared, so did the Zune Music Manager. Its alternative became Groove Music. Initially, it had very similar capabilities to the Zune app. You can purchase music, subscribe to additional listening, and manage your music collection.
With the release of Windows 10, Microsoft decided to phase out Windows Media Player and move to Groove Music. For many users, Windows Media Player is still in your system because users don't really want to give up on it. At first, I didn’t want to, either, because you could extract music from a purchased CD on your computer.
Now, years after its release, Groove Music has become an impressive and easy-to-use music player and manager. It modernizes Windows Media Player and Zune Music Manager to create something better.
Groove Music features
The app is pre-installed in Windows 10, so no download is required. You don't actually need a Microsoft account to use it, although you can use it.
The main purpose of this app is to play music files stored on your computer. It currently supports the following file types:
- mp3
- wma
- flac
- wav
- aac
- m4a
- 3gp
- 3g2
- amr
- ac3
These cover most audio files you will normally play. If your desktop or laptop has an optical drive, it can also play CDs.
If you use Windows Media Player, your current playlist will be imported automatically. Also, you can create your own playlist. One of my favorite features is the ability to play all audio files randomly without creating a playlist.
Other features you'll like include:
- Search box for finding artists, albums, and songs
- View the entire collection filtered by artist, album, or song title
- Quickly return to the most recently played albums and playlists
- Adjust the player size to normal, small or full screen
- View upcoming songs in the playlist
- Sort the playlists to quickly find what you want
- Adjust the equalizer for custom sound
- Change the theme to the current Windows 10 theme, light or dark
- Set multiple areas to search for music to import
How to use Groove Music
The interface is simple and puts all the focus on your music, and I love that. Admittedly, the player looks prettier than Windows Media Player, although it does have fewer options.
Open the Start menu and enter Groove Music to open the app.
By default, the app starts importing music stored in the Windows 10 music folder. If you use a different folder, you can change it by going to the settings menu of Groove Music. This is in the lower left corner of the window.
Select "Select where we look for music" to select the folder you want to extract. If you store music on an external hard drive or cloud storage service to save space, you can also select these folders. You need to link the cloud storage folder to your computer because Groove Music does not work directly with the cloud service. Obviously, it works well with OneDrive.
You can also change the equalizer settings in the settings. While there are no advanced options, you can make some basic changes. This helps you get a more custom sound.
Play music
Use the burger menu in the upper left corner to quickly search for music and access the playlist. You can even start creating new playlists from here.
Select any song, artist, album, or playlist to start playing music. Click the currently play song at the bottom to expand the player to window size and view upcoming songs, or minimize the player using the Minimize button on the right of the volume control.
If you have a series of random songs playing, hover over any song to quickly add it to the playlist, remove it and other songs from the list, or start playing the song.
When you check a song, you will see a series of options at the bottom of the player. Easily edit the current playlist the way you want.
Overall, Groove Music is very easy to use. It has almost no extra features. It is a music player that allows you to manage your collection and do its job well. This is a good choice for a free app. Of course, if you are looking for a different option, there are other free options available.
