Pebble's Creator Unveils Core 2 Duo Smartwatch: A Retro Revival
The creator of the iconic Pebble smartwatch, Eric Migicovsky, recently showcased a prototype of his new Core 2 Duo smartwatch on his podcast, "Tick Talk w/ Eric Migicovsky." This marks a significant step towards the return of a minimalist smartwatch design reminiscent of the popular Pebble range.
While the demo revealed some software imperfections—notably, the current inability to display the time—the Core Devices team is actively addressing these issues, alongside finalizing hardware drivers. Despite the ongoing development, Migicovsky remains confident in a July 2025 release date, although potential delays are acknowledged given the short timeframe.
The Core 2 Duo's physical design, heavily inspired by the Pebble 2, appears complete. It boasts a silicone strap with a convenient tuck-away slot, offering a familiar yet refined aesthetic. While similar to the Pebble 2, subtle design differences distinguish it. A Core Time 2 model, based on the Pebble Time 2, is also planned for a December 2025 release, contingent on the Core 2 Duo's success.

The podcast also addressed the significant challenge of US tariffs on the Shenzhen, China-manufactured watches. While current tariff proposals are stalled, a 27.5% tariff on Chinese-made smartwatches could add $10-$25 to the Core 2 Duo's projected $149 price point. Whether this cost increase will be absorbed or passed on to consumers remains uncertain.
