The Mail App updated on iPadOS 18.4 introduces the mail category feature. The feature is designed to automatically classify inbox messages in the Mail App into specific categories, including "Main", "Transaction", "Update" and "Promotion", as well as a nearly hidden "All Mail" option.
While this feature is designed to clean up and organize users’ inboxes, in practice, many users find that the Mail Category feature prioritizes old useless messages (such as DoorDash promotional emails a few months ago) and hides recent useful messages from real people (such as family, friends, colleagues). In addition, the Mail Category feature adds an additional layer of interaction between the inbox in the Mail App and the actual view of all messages. For these reasons, and others, some users may want to disable the Mail Category feature on their iPad (you can also disable the Mail Category feature on the Mac Mail App and turn it off on iPhone Mail).
If you want to restore the Mail App on your iPad to a simple classic interface and disable the Mail Category feature, we'll walk you through the action, as this setting is not in the Settings app.
How to disable email categories on iPad on iPadOS 18.4 and later
Here is how to turn off the mail category sorting feature on the latest iPadOS:
- Open the Mail App on your iPad.
- On the main email screen, click the Add (…) button in the upper right corner of your inbox.
- Select List View from the context pop-up menu.
- Mail Inbox on iPad will be restored to the classic mail appearance and features, without sorting categories.
Once the mail category is disabled, you will now see all messages in a single inbox again, ensuring that you don't miss important messages and don't find useless messages being shown first, just as I and many other users have found their mail inbox behave when using the new mail category feature.
If you disabled this feature on your iPad, you may also want to do this on your iPhone Mail App and Mac Mail App.
Do you like the new email category features on iPad, Mac, and iPhone? Have you found automatic mail sorting useful to you, or have you found that mails are inappropriately prioritized and placed in areas with little meaning? Have you disabled this feature or do you like it and plan to stay enabled? Please share your thoughts and experiences in the comments.
