This tutorial offers two efficient methods for removing formatting from Excel spreadsheets. Dealing with extensive formatting in large spreadsheets can be cumbersome. These techniques streamline the process.
Manually removing formatting is inefficient. Excel offers better solutions.
Method 1: The "Clear Formats" Function
This method completely removes all formatting while preserving data.
- Select: Highlight the cells needing formatting removal. This can be a single cell, a range, a row, a column, or the entire sheet (Ctrl A). For non-adjacent selections, use Ctrl click.
- Clear: Go to the "Home" tab, locate the "Editing" group, and click the arrow next to the "Clear" button.
- Choose: Select "Clear Formats."
This removes all formatting (conditional formatting, number formats, fonts, colors, borders, etc.).
Tip: For quicker access, add the "Clear Formats" command to the Quick Access Toolbar (File > Options > Quick Access Toolbar > All Commands > Add "Clear Formats") or create a custom group on the ribbon (Right-click the ribbon > Customize the Ribbon… > New Group > Rename > Add "Clear Formats").
Method 2: Utilizing the Format Painter
The Format Painter, typically used for copying formatting, can also remove it.
- Select Source: Choose an unformatted cell near the target cells.
- Activate Format Painter: Click the Format Painter button on the "Home" tab.
- Apply: Select the cells with formatting you want to remove.
Important Note: Neither method removes formatting applied to parts of a cell's content (e.g., highlighting a single word).
These methods provide efficient ways to clear formatting in Excel, saving time and effort.
