Nintendo Confirms A Disappointing Detail About The GameCube Controller For Switch 2

Nintendo confirms limitations for its retro GameCube controller, launching alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 in June. While the controller offers a classic gaming experience for the new GameCube titles added to the Nintendo Switch Online Classics library, its functionality is surprisingly restricted.
According to fine print spotted by VGC in a Nintendo UK trailer, the controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics titles. This contrasts with previous retro controllers released for the Switch, which, while primarily designed for their respective systems, also functioned with other games, being recognized as standard Switch Pro Controllers.
A Retro GameCube Controller for a Modern Console
The Switch 2's launch will include a small selection of GameCube games accessible via Nintendo Switch Online, expanding over time. A near-identical replica of the original GameCube controller, featuring a new C button, will be available concurrently.
Addressing Switch 1 Issues?
Hints from a Nintendo developer roundtable suggest a possible attempt to address past Switch shortcomings, though details remain unclear.
While Nintendo has previously issued similar compatibility disclaimers for retro controllers—some of which proved usable beyond their intended purpose—this GameCube controller's limitations are noteworthy.
The Curious Case of the New Controller
The release of this new controller is puzzling given that existing GameCube controller adapters for the original Switch are confirmed compatible with the Switch 2 (as per Nintendo's official support website). The adapters' functionality with the GameCube Classics games remains to be seen, but their compatibility suggests the new controller's purpose is primarily to offer the added C button for purists. Unless the library expands significantly, the need for a dedicated retro controller seems questionable.
