Alan Wake II: A Novelist's Journey into Interactive Storytelling
Sam Lake, the 55-year-old Finnish game developer behind Max Payne and the recently released Alan Wake II, always dreamt of being a novelist. His passion for literature, however, found its outlet in the interactive narratives of video games. Sitting before a "Federal Bureau of Control" plaque – a nod to his 2019 game, Control – and amidst maroon curtains reminiscent of Twin Peaks, Lake discusses his literary influences, citing authors like Paul Auster, Thomas Pynchon, and Bret Easton Ellis, as well as comic books and crime fiction. These influences, he explains, resonate deeply within his storytelling.
A pivotal moment arrived at age 12 when Lake discovered The Lord of the Rings, sparking a lifelong love affair with Tolkien's works and Norse mythology. "Books were my first love, and they've always been part of my creative toolbox," he shares. This isn't unique to Lake; the gaming industry increasingly draws inspiration from literature and folklore. BAFTA's Games Awards nominees showcase this trend: Black Myth: Wukong adapts Journey to the West, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II delves into Icelandic mythology, and Baldur's Gate 3 (last year's winner) stems from Dungeons & Dragons.
This evolution extends beyond mere inspiration. Modern games tackle complex themes – trauma in The Last of Us, fatherhood in God of War – showcasing a significant leap from the simpler mechanics of Pong and Space Invaders.
Lake's nearly 30-year career reflects this shift. He contrasts the pulpy style of 2010's Alan Wake with the sophisticated narrative of its sequel. "The ambition has matured," he notes, highlighting the increased complexity of Alan Wake II, a story blending traditional animation and live-action sequences to portray a troubled writer and FBI agent.
Metaphor: ReFantazio – A New Level of Narrative Immersion
Katsura Hashino, director of Metaphor: ReFantazio (also nominated for BAFTA's best narrative award), attributes the enhanced storytelling capabilities of video games to technological advancements. "As technology has evolved, games have become a powerful means of expression," he explains, citing the ability to portray nuanced emotions and complex moral ambiguities.
Hashino's RPG tackles social class and anxiety, leveraging the unique interactivity of gaming. "Unlike literature and film, video games allow players to fully immerse themselves in another world," he says. "To draw players in completely, it's more effective to provide a realistic experience rather than simply telling a story."
Lake echoes this sentiment: "Gaming is the most exciting storytelling medium because of its creative freedom. Older forms often adhere to rigid formats, while games offer exploration and innovation."
