RIP: Google Assistant Will Be Fully Replaced by Gemini Later This Year

Mar 17, 2025 am 12:06 AM

Google Assistant is being phased out in favor of Gemini. Starting later in 2025, Gemini will completely replace Assistant on Android phones. This follows a year of updates designed to bring Gemini's capabilities in line with the more established Assistant.

The transition will begin this year, with most mobile devices losing access to the original Google Assistant. Gemini is already the default on many new Android phones from major manufacturers like Samsung, OnePlus, and Motorola. While initially an opt-in, Google reports millions have already switched.

Google states: "Over the coming months, we’re upgrading more users on mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini; and later this year, the classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices or available for new downloads on mobile app stores. This upgrade will also extend to tablets, cars, and connected devices like headphones and watches. A new Gemini-powered experience will launch on home devices such as speakers, displays, and TVs. More details will be shared in the coming months; until then, Google Assistant will continue to function on these devices."

Users of Assistant will receive upgrade prompts in the coming months. However, devices running Android 9 or earlier with less than 2GB of RAM will retain access to Google Assistant.

Despite the transition, Google acknowledges ongoing work to improve Gemini's daily performance. They are actively addressing the gap between Assistant's established features and Gemini's current capabilities. Progress updates are available on Google's website.

The swift replacement raises questions. While Google promotes its AI advancements, simultaneously admitting Gemini still needs improvement after Assistant's decade-long presence since 2016, is somewhat contradictory. Which is truly superior?

RIP: Google Assistant Will Be Fully Replaced by Gemini Later This Year Related ##### AI Search Engines Often "Confidently Wrong"

Concerns about AI accuracy are well-founded. A recent study by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism revealed that popular AI search engines are "confidently wrong" up to 76% of the time.

4 Google Assistant, initially launched within Allo and the first Google Home, gradually integrated into Pixel phones and various Android/Wear OS devices. Google continued expanding its smart device ecosystem with Assistant.

Then, in early 2023, pressured by ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, Google introduced Bard, later rebranded as Gemini in early 2024 and subsequently pushed to Android. Since then, Google Assistant has been targeted for replacement.

Gemini's accuracy is a key concern. Studies show AI chatbots often confidently provide inaccurate information. In one test, Gemini was partially or completely wrong 74% of the time when tasked with verifying article headlines, publishers, dates, and URLs. This raises significant concerns as Gemini becomes the primary AI assistant for millions.
