New emoji arrive in second iOS 18.4 developer beta

A number of emojis added to iOS 18.4 developer beta version, including characters proposed by the Unicode Alliance in May 2024. These characters are now available in the information application.

The second developer beta version of iOS 18.4 released by Apple has added many new features, including some new emojis. These eight graphic symbols will appear in users who have installed the latest version of the developer beta released on Monday and other text-based applications.

The eight new emojis included:

  • Rhizome Vegetables
  • Eye bags and face
  • Shovel
  • Harp
  • Splash
  • Leafless Tree
  • Sak Island Flag
  • Fingerprint

All of these emojis can be found by their specified name under the search function of the emoji keyboard. Although they appear in developer beta, average users must wait until the release of future iOS 18.4 and other Apple operating system updates before they can be used on their iPhones.

Apple also updated the Syrian flag emoji to reflect the country's current actual flag. It uses three-color stripes of green, white and black, with three red stars in the middle.

Currently, test users can select and add new emojis to the information, but only other users using the beta version can see them. Send a new emoji to a user using an earlier iOS version of the device will display a block with a question mark indicating missing or "error" elements in the message.

Long process, small symbol

The process of adding new emojis to the emoji list is extremely long and extremely complicated for seemingly insignificant things.

The eight emojis were proposed by the Unicode Alliance in May 2024 for Unicode 16. All proposed symbols entered the testing phase and were approved later that year.

However, after approval, Apple and its peers must create their own designs based on these proposals for iOS and other operating systems.

While eight emoji images are about to appear on public devices, there are more emojis coming soon, but they will be released much longer.

In November 2024, the Unicode Alliance's Emoticon Standards and Research Working Group managed the proposals for 164 emoticon symbols. These symbols include killer whales, Bigfoot creatures, twisted faces, ballerinas, apple cores, landslides and trombones.

If approved, this batch of emojis will constitute the emoji 17.0 to be released in September. Apple may include it in iOS 19 in a few months.
