Apple, Why Doesn't My iPhone or iPad Have a Volume Mixer Yet?
Feb 06, 2025 am 11:47 AMApple's stubborn refusal to adopt Android's volume mixer is a frustrating oversight. While Apple prioritizes simplicity, this minimalism negatively impacts the user experience. The lack of a volume mixer removes crucial control, making managing separate audio levels for different apps unnecessarily complex.
The iPhone's contextual volume controls frequently lead to errors. Adjusting the volume often inadvertently mutes ringer and notification sounds, resulting in missed calls and messages. The workaround—toggling "Change with Buttons"—requires navigating a cumbersome menu.
Apple could easily implement a volume mixer. Long-pressing the volume control in Control Center already offers expanded controls. Extending this to include separate volume sliders for ringer, notifications, and media would be a straightforward improvement. The underlying functionality already exists; it simply needs to be made accessible.
Dismissing the need for a volume mixer as overly complicated for average users is shortsighted. Android's widespread adoption of the feature demonstrates its usability. The current iOS solution is inelegant, particularly for creative professionals who rely on workarounds like Audiobus to manage audio outputs.
While the physical mute button offers some control, it's insufficient. It allows muting ringer and notifications while preserving media audio, but lacks the granular control a volume mixer provides.
This simple yet impactful feature would significantly improve iPhone usability. Addressing this 10% of frustrating experiences would greatly enhance the overall user satisfaction.
