The Samsung Galaxy A16 5G Might Be the Next Phone I Buy My Parents
Feb 06, 2025 am 10:20 AMI don't purchase phones for my parents, but I'm their go-to advisor for phone upgrades. For years, I've recommended Moto G phones. However, Samsung's Galaxy A16 5G, now available in the US, has changed my recommendation.
Budget Phones: Perfectly Suited for My Parents
My parents fall into the category of needing a phone, not wanting one. My mother only recently transitioned from a flip phone, and my father frequently forgets his phone at home. Their needs are simple.
I usually suggest a Moto G – affordable, reasonably durable, and (until recently) relatively bloatware-free. They've been satisfied. There are many reasons why budget phones are a smart choice for many users.
The Achilles Heel of Most Budget Phones
The major drawback of many budget phones is limited software support. Often, they receive only one major Android update. This leaves them vulnerable to security risks due to unpatched vulnerabilities.
While my parents wouldn't notice, this is a significant concern. Unsupported phones are easy targets for malicious actors. Google's attempt to mitigate this by shifting components to Google Play Services helps, but crucial parts remain unsupported.
Samsung's Game-Changing Budget Phone
The Galaxy A16 5G is a game-changer. Samsung is offering a remarkable six years of software updates!
Until recently, even $1000 Android phones often received only a couple of years of support. This is still the case with many gaming phones. Seven years of support is a key selling point for Pixel and premium Samsung Galaxy phones, a significant advantage over brands like OnePlus.
The $200 Galaxy A16 5G undercuts the $500 Pixel 8a (with its seven years of support) significantly. The Pixel 8a is more comparable to the $400 Galaxy A35 (five years of updates).
As a Galaxy Z Fold 6 owner, I appreciate high-end phones. But this extended software support for a budget phone is truly exciting. It addresses a long-standing weakness of Android phones, not just at the high end, but now also in the affordable segment.
