Use Google Maps for Car Navigation with CarPlay

If you have a car that supports Apple CarPlay and don't like Apple Maps, you can use Google Maps to get detailed, step-by-step navigation in the car. The following is how to use it:

Step 1: Download Google Maps

First, make sure that Google Maps is installed on your iPhone. It is available for free download on the App Store. It is recommended that you turn it on before getting on the car so that the app can access your location, which is necessary to track your location.

Connect your iPhone to a CarPlay-enabled vehicle to activate CarPlay. (Old vehicle? CarPlay can be added to almost any vehicle.)

Find Google Maps on your CarPlay screen and tap Start. The next steps depend on your destination.

Step 2: Get the way-by-way navigation in CarPlay's Google Maps

After Google Maps runs, it can provide you with a direction-by-step navigation of almost any destination via voice. First, touch the screen until a magnifying glass or the Search button appears at the top (it will also show "Recenter" if you've been scrolling the map). Once it appears, tap it.

To use voice search, you need to grant Google Maps permission to use the microphone in Settings > Apps > Google Maps.

For example, if you touch the Voice Search button, the system will ask where you want to go. Say the name of your destination loudly. It can be an address (e.g., “4403 Denmark Street, Tampa”), the name of a landmark (e.g., a park, a monument or a famous building), or a business.

For example, if you say "Kmart", Google Maps provides a list of the most recent Kmart locations. If you search by keyboard or browse by category, you will also see a similar list of search results. Tap the listing location you want to access.

After that, Google Maps will show an overview of the route path on the map and how long it will take to get there. To start the route, press Start.

The lower right corner of the display (or the lower left corner, depending on whether you are driving left or right) has four buttons.

The top one looks like a triangle that lets you report dangers such as a car accident, a police presence, a speeding camera or a roadblock.

The second one looks like four arrows, allowing you to move the map freely. You can already do this by sliding the map, but if you use this button, the map will not recenter immediately during driving.

The third icon looks like a speaker, allowing you to mute or unmute Google's voice driving commands. The last icon provides an overview of the entire route and allows you to use the More Routes button to select another route (if you prefer).

After arriving at the destination, Google Maps will remind you through voice and the screen will also change. Tap End Itinerary to clear the itinerary in Google Maps.

Sometimes you may not trigger the trip end destination, for example if you stop a little further, in which case you need to end the trip yourself.

Step 3: Change the settings of Google Maps on CarPlay

If you want to change the settings of Google Maps while using CarPlay, tap your car touch screen until you see a blue gear icon, and then tap the "Gear" icon.

"Volume" allows you to adjust the volume of voice that provides directional navigation and route warnings. If you want to change any of these settings, tap the corresponding button in the menu. Once you have finished setting, tap the Back button and your changes will be saved.
