In developing a JavaScript video poker game, it was encountered that jQuery click event handlers for bet buttons were triggering multiple times. This resulted in incorrect bet amounts being placed.
The issue lies in the presence of multiple click events attached to the same elements. Initially, the click event for each bet button operates as intended, triggering once when pressed. However, after the place button is clicked, placing the bet, subsequent clicks on the bet buttons fire the click event twice each, progressively increasing the bet amount.
The unexpected behavior can be attributed to the way jQuery attaches multiple click event handlers to the same element. When a new click event is added, it is stacked on top of the previously registered ones. This stacking effect causes multiple event firings.
To resolve this issue, the attached click events need to be removed before adding new ones. This ensures that only the latest click event implementation is in effect, preventing multiple firings.
In the provided code, the click event of each bet button should be unbind before a new click event is added. This can be achieved through the unbind() method as follows:
