However, by episode 3, you come across a familiar, hard-to-swallow issue: the appearance of the VIPs in their golden animal masks, delivering some of the worst lines and performances in the entire series. It’s so jarring that it completely pulls you out of the episode, which otherwise features strong performances from its Korean cast. Spoilers ahead.

The question is…h(huán)ow did this happen again? After the backlash the VIPs received following season 1, how could they get this group of villains so wrong yet again? This time around, there’s an American, one or two Brits, and possibly a woman from Japan. The twist this time is that they were allowed to “participate” in the second game by serving as part of the clean-up crew tasked with shooting players who failed.

The dialogue is dreadful. It’s not just the writing, which truly is awful; it’s also the acting delivery and the strange fact that this English dialogue sounds like it’s been dubbed over itself, as if recorded separately in different booths. For some reason, that might actually be exactly what happened.

These are the exact same criticisms fans had about the season 1 VIPs, and although some speculated it was done intentionally for a campy effect seen in older genre films, that doesn’t seem to be the case here either. In fact, one of the actors gave an interview explaining why the performance came off as so strange and poorly executed. This quote comes from The Guardian, published shortly after season 1 dropped:

“It varies from show to show, but non-Korean performers often work with dialogue translated by someone who isn’t a native speaker – sometimes even using Google Translate – which makes it sound unnatural,” he explained. “Also, we usually don’t have access to the full scripts. We’re only given our own scenes, so we have no idea about the overall tone.”

“We were all wearing heavy plaster masks and seated on couches that were at least 20-30 feet apart from each other. We had to shout our lines into empty space, which definitely affected the weird tone of our delivery.”

This perfectly describes what’s still happening now, down to the physical distance between the VIPs. It’s nearly impossible to believe there was no way to correct this since season 1. The possible explanations are either that they intentionally kept it this bad despite the criticism, or they simply messed up again and failed to learn from past mistakes.

Once more, the rest of the show remains excellent so far, but once again, the VIPs represent the weakest part of the series – so much so that they drag down the quality of the entire episode.
